Annual Fund-Raising Drive Raises Nearly $90,000 To Aid
Local Community
As a result of October’s fund-raising effort, nearly $90,000 was raised
to support the Maury Regional Healthcare Foundation and the United
Way of Maury County, according to drive co-chairs Jennifer Busby, director of health information management, and David Thomas, director
of radiation therapy.
“Last year, Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) changed the
way it approaches employee fund-raising drives. Employees are now
asked just one time per year to make donations to the Maury Regional
Healthcare Foundation and the United Way and are no longer asked to
give to additional charities,” said Busby. “Focusing our efforts like this
will help to make a greater impact on those we serve.”
Employees, volunteers, physicians and board members pledged Pictured is drive Co-Chair Busby with Foun$54,310 to the foundation and $35,116 to the local United Way chap- dation Executive Director Kilgore reviewing

tion, more than $13,000 was designated to the general foundation fund.
Other top funds were the William R. Walter Employee Assistance Fund, which assists employees during unexpected
emergencies or with their continuing education; the Cancer Fund, which provides cancer patients with medications
and other medical supplies who would otherwise be unable to obtain such items; and the Special Needs Fund, which

Award-Winning Services Featured in MRMC Commercials
MRMC launched two new television commercials in January. One commercial focuses on clinical excellence
and the awards and recognitions the medical center has received, including being one of only 23 hospitals in the
nation to receive the Premier Award for Quality and being recognized as a Top 50 health system. The second
commercial promotes the skilled surgical services provided at the medical center, ranging from minimally invasive
to complex vascular procedures. These commercials complement those that the medical center has aired in the
past promoting cancer, women’s, orthopedic and heart services.
“We have worked hard to become one of the nation’s best hospitals, and our commitment to excellence has
been recognized on a national level. These commercials illustrate our accomplishments and our commitment to
provide the best possible care to every patient every day. Thank you to everyone involved in the production of
these commercials,” said CEO Robert Otwell.
The commercials air on Channel 2, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Fox17—predominately during news segments—and on several cable networks including CNN, Discovery, Food Network, HGTV, the History Channel and
MSNBC. The spots are also available for public viewing on mauryregional.com.

Vice Presidents Retire After Years of
Dedicated Service
Two long-serving vice presidents, Darlene Baxter
and Ron Pope, recently retired from the medical center
after years of faithful service.
Baxter worked for MRMC for more than 25 years,
most recently as vice president of affiliated services and
executive director of the Maury Regional Healthcare
Foundation. Previously, she held the positions of director
of business/community affairs, director of hospital relations, assistant administrator-support departments and
associate administrator.
The Maury Regional Healthcare Foundation was established in October 2006 under Baxter. Last year she was instrumental in initiating the Dispensary of Hope, which provides free medication to patients meeting a
certain financial criteria at Ambulatory Care and the Lewis Health Center. In 2005,
Baxter received the Tennessee Hospital Association (THA) Meritorious Service
Award for Senior Executives for her exemplary leadership within the organization
and the community.
Pope began working for Maury Regional nearly 34
years ago. He most recently served as vice president of
administrative and ancillary services. Pope also served
as patient accounts manager, director of patient accounting, business office manager, assistant administrator and
associate administrator.
Pope has been affiliated with the American College
of Healthcare Executives and served on the Tennessee
Medical Laboratory Board of Directors. During his time
with MRMC, Pope has been instrumental in the Certificate of Need process for many of the services now provided, as well as facility expansions and technological improvements.
“Ron and Darlene have shown great passion for providing quality services to
the people of Maury County and the surrounding communities. They have been
instrumental in many of the accomplishments the medical center has made in the
past several decades. Their unwavering commitment to Maury Regional throughout the years is an example to all,” said CEO Robert Otwell.
Employees Participate in Blood Drive
The blood drive on January 20 resulted in 55 productive units of blood
which has the potential to save 165
lives. The next blood drive is scheduled
for June 9.

Cervical Cancer Screenings Offered
Maury Regional Medical Center offered a free cervical cancer screening
on January 22 for women who had not been screened in the past year or who
are at greater risk for developing cervical cancer. The screening was provided
at the MRMC Cancer Center by Michael J. Pelletier, M.D., a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology.
“With the recent increases in unemployment, we realized that there are numerous women in our region who
might no longer have insurance. When this happens,
women often don’t get wellness screenings such as their
annual Pap test,” said Pam Hibbs, administrative director
of women’s and children’s services at MRMC.
Hibbs also was a guest speaker at the Columbia Housing Authority’s monthly Health Watch program, sponsored
by MRMC. She discussed risk factors, prevention and the

importance of screening in regards to cervical cancer.

Employee Suggestion Program Updated
The recognition process for We Are Maury, the employee suggestion program for improving patient and employee experiences at the medical center,
was updated on January 1. Employees will now be recognized by name for
submitting ideas to the program, according to Brenda Totty, vice president of
quality services.
Ideas that are implemented will be listed in Weekly Notes once a month
with the submitter’s name. New incentives have been added, including $25
checks for implemented ideas and a quarterly drawing for a $50 check for all
eligible ideas.
Five individuals were recently presented with $25 awards for their suggestions submitted and approved for implementation. Those employees are:
Sue MacArthur, Staff Development; Judy Culberson, Endoscopy; Donna Pullen, Switchboard; Kathy Lampley, Quality Services; and Patrick Harlan, Business Development. Suggestions included installing automatic door openers,
posting listings of nursing station numbers, installing a sign to help individuals
locate the restroom on the second floor, creating a system to notify departments when an employee’s status changes, and eye exams for Care-A-Van
drivers. In addition, Pat Troope, Security, was the winner of the We Are Maury
logo contest and received a $50 gas card.
Ultrasound Re-Accreditation Received
Maury Regional Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of
re-accreditation in obstetric, gynecological, vascular and general ultrasound
services as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology
(ACR).
“This accreditation is a reflection of the commitment and quality services
that the Ultrasound Department provides. Thank you for your dedication to
excellence,” said Pam Williams, director of imaging.
The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high
practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluation are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who
are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and
the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the
ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice
with a comprehensive report.
Leadership Maury Visits MRMC
Members of the Maury Alliance’s
Leadership Maury, a local personal
development program designed to
motivate participants to enhance the
quality of their leadership in addressing pertinent community needs, visited
MRMC on January 21 to learn more
about health care in their community.
During their visit, they toured several
departments within the medical center. Pictured is Brenda Bishop, chest pain
center coordinator, with several participants while conducting a tour of
the CT room.

Certifications
Numerous OB nurses received
certification from the National Certification Corporation (NCC). Kelly
Taylor and Rhonda Curry earned
a certification in maternal newborn
nursing. Amanda Ingram, Janet Maloney, Deborah McCormack, Heather
Bowen, Aimee Pilapil and Christine
Carson received certification in low
risk newborn nursing. Sally Thurman
earned a certification in high risk neonatal nursing. All nurses sat for their

MRMC Encourages Staff to “Go Red”
on Feb. 5 in Support of Heart Month
In recognition of Heart Disease Awareness Month in February, the medical center encourages everyone to wear red on February 5, the American
Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day.
“Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s number one
killer—in men and women. On National Wear Red Day we are encouraging all
staff to wear red and to speak up against heart disease,” said Brenda Bishop,
chest pain center coordinator.
Know the signs of a heart attack:

• Discomfort in other parts of the upper body, one or both arms, neck, jaw,
upper back or stomach
• Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort
• Unusual fatigue
• Other signs are breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or light-headedness

Thanks in large part to donations made to the Maury Regional
Healthcare Foundation Cardiology Fund, the readmission rate of
congestive heart failure patients has steadily decreased in recent months, according to Paula Streeter, disease management RN.
In June 2009, Streeter began the Disease Management Program which involves educating congestive heart failure patients after discharge on medications,
weighing instructions, future signs and symptoms, and follow up appointments.
These patients are instructed to weigh themselves at home for fluid management
because a gain of as little as three pounds from one day to the next is significant. Since the program began, the foundation has purchased 48 digital scales
through the Cardiology Fund for congestive heart failure patients who could not
otherwise obtain them.
“Due to the donations made to the Cardiology Fund, our patients are able to
better manage their conditions and stay healthy. The considerable decrease in
readmission rates is evidence of that,” said Streeter.
For more information on donating to the Cardiology Fund or other foundation
funds, call Joe Kilgore, executive director of the foundation, at 380.4075

Letters of Thanks
To Critical Care Unit:
What a busy but blessed
season! We celebrated the family holiday of Thanksgiving and
moved quickly to the Advent Season of Christmas. There has been
an unusual air of “busy-ness” in
the air. Unfortunately, as activity
has increased, so has the need
in the community. We could not
start to serve the masses without
your help...Your generous support
brought delight to these children
and smiles and tears of appreciation from their parents...I am grateful for your continuing support! On
behalf of the staff and board of directors, I thank you for sharing your
gifts with these families in need in
