HOSPITAL OVERVIEW
Toronto East General Hospital is an active community teaching hospital that provides mental health services across
the life span for both in- and outpatients. It is located in a vibrant and diverse multicultural community within ten
minutes of downtown Toronto at 825 Coxwell Avenue, a few blocks north of the Danforth. It is TTC accessible via the
Coxwell Subway Station on the Bloor/Danforth line.
TEGH offers a full spectrum of child and adolescent mental health services, including inpatient, day treatment, urgent
care and outpatient options, allowing for the creation of a balanced rotation with opportunities for individualization.
INPATIENT SERVICE:
Our six bed inpatient unit focuses on the resolution of mental health crises by providing assessment, stabilization and
acute treatment for children and adolescents up to the age of 18. Our program is delivered by an experienced
interdisciplinary team that includes child and youth counsellors, registered nurses, a social worker and psychiatrists.
Residents will have the opportunity to work with their primary supervisor and interdisciplinary team members from
the start of an admission to discharge of the patient. Responsibilities will include diagnostic and risk assessments,
formulation of a collaborative treatment plan, medication initiation and monitoring, individual and family work, and
participation in team rounds, case conferences, debriefings and discharge meetings. Some patients will move on to
the transitional day program (KIT) and can be followed until discharge to the community within a two week time
frame.
OUTPATIENT SERVICES:
Our outpatient services include general psychiatric consultation with brief follow-up, a Medication Clinic, an Urgent
Care Clinic, an Anxiety Clinic, a shared care service, and a day treatment classroom for school avoidant youth.
Residents will conduct general psychiatric assessments and provide follow-up of selected patients, including starting
and monitoring medications for the most common diagnoses (e.g. ADHD, anxiety disorders, major depressive and
other mood disorders, etc.), as well as providing appropriate non-pharmacological interventions. Participation in
specific clinics or programs can be arranged by request.
