The good news is that several effective treatments are available, and you now have choices that do not require a major surgery. > Do not respond to medications or have developed side effects from it Thermachoice method uses a balloon placed in the uterine cavity through the cervix. Hot fluid is circulated inside the balloon to destroy the endometrium. Therefore, Thermachoice is a good alternative to hysterectomy for many women with heavy uterine bleeding who: > Have completed childbearing and wish to retain their womb or avoid major surgery Are my periods normal? Actual size of GYNECARE THERMACHOICE balloon when inflated is approximately the size of a quarter. The balloon conforms to the unique contours of your body. The average period lasts 5—7 days. Your menstrual flow is probably heavy if it: > Soaks through one or more tampons or napkins every 1—2 hours Causes and Treatment > Lasts longer than seven days > Has presence of large blood clots or flooding (soaked through panty or dress or bed sheets) > Interferes with your regular daily activities including work, is accompanied by fatigue and easy tiredness If you have any of the above, see your doctor to discuss options for treatment of heavy periods. There are many causes of abnormal menstrual bleeding. The most common are: Fibroids Endometrial or cervical polyps Pelvic infections Endometriosis Adenomyosis 95% SUCCESS 48% light bleeding 24% normal periods Cancer of the cervix/womb (uterus) Medical illness 5% heavy periods 23% no bleeding at all Menstrual flow after Thermachoice treatment, with an overall success of 95% In up to 50% of cases, no cause for the bleeding is found. For many years, removal of the womb (hysterectomy) has been the main surgical treatment for women with heavy periods who do not respond to medications. Fortunately, most heavy menstrual bleeding can now be easily treated without major surgery in those with no obvious cause. This method is called Endometrial Ablation and involves the removal or destruction of the endometrium (lining of the uterus). There are many types of endometrial ablation procedures and Thermachoice (Uterine Balloon Therapy) is one of the most popular methods now. > Do not have other uterine pathologies such as large fibroids, polyps and cancer > Have not reached menopause Women undergoing this procedure should have had a recent Pap smear, a diagnostic hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy. All these tests should be normal prior to endometrial ablation. Recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) (www.nice.org.uk) guideline on Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (issue date: January 2007) stated that endometrial ablation should be considered preferable to hysterectomy for women who have heavy menstrual bleeding and uterus no bigger than a 10-week pregnancy.
