Baroque Rediscovery
Fortunate Talent
Baroque music continues to hold many new
treasures in store, and this release - a CD first! represents
the
rediscovery of
recorder
compositions by the French composer ElisabethClaude Jacquet de la Guerre in model
renderings by the tried-and-true camerata
moderna.
After her marriage Elisabeth retired from the
court. At thirty-two, in 1697, she lost her only
child, and her husband died soon thereafter. It
was then that she resumed her career as a
composer, submitting her Pièces de clavecin to
the king and composing many fascinating works,
some of which are heard on this CD. A reviewer
of her times wrote, "Here experts find
tenderness, a lot of fire, beautiful harmony, and a
very fortunate talent."
Early Starter
Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre was from
an old Paris family of instrument builders and
musicians. Her father Claude was the organist at
Saint-Louis on the Seine islet. Elisabeth created
a sensation at the court of Louis XIV as a fiveyear-old child prodigy. At thirteen she was
playing harpsichord and organ in the
distinguished Chapelle Royale by order of the
king.
