Sharlene, Celtic & Classical harps
Susan Piltch, flute & piano
Susan Piltch (flute & piano) and Sharlene Wallace (harp) are a duo that perform on three instruments! Playing
flute, piano and harp, their repertoire spans Classical, Celtic and contemporary popular genres. Concert
audiences will experience the music of Vivaldi, Donizetti, Faure, Miyagi, Vangelis, O’Carolan, Bolling ... as well
as original music by both Susan and Sharlene. Piltch & Wallace have had a number of performances which
include the Sunday concert series at the Royal Ontario Museum and the Music for a Winter’s Eve concert series
in Toronto. They are currently recording a CD to be released in the new year.
SUSAN PILTCH
Toronto-born flutist/pianist Susan Piltch began her music studies at age 4 at the Royal Conservatory
of Music with pianist/composer Dr. Samuel Dolin. She later studied recorder with Hugh Orr, then flute with her father Bernard Piltch,
and Judith Schenkman.
Susan has worked as a flutist in orchestras backing Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Bennett, the Ice Follies, the Disney Show (CNE), the
Oriana Singers, the Amadeus Choir, the Elmer Iseler Singers. In addition, she has provided music for dancers Karen Kain & Rex
Harrington, The Pirates of Penzance (Royal Alexander Theatre), radio and television jingles, High Tea at the King Edward Hotel
(1983-87), film scores and gala receptions.
Susan’s collaboration with guitarist/composer Daniel LaBrash has led to two CD recording projects: The Moon and Flowers (1994) and
Nature’s Play (1996), expanding her new-found roles as producer and composer.
Susan’s current freelance work includes solo piano, flute w/guitar Duo, flute w/harp Duo, flute w/violin & cello Trio, piano w/violin &
cello Trio and flute w/piano & bass Jazz Trio.
Susan began teaching private lessons on recorder, flute & piano while still in Junior High School. She has been teaching children and
adults for over 30 years. She incorporates her classical, pop and jazz styles into her lessons.
SHARLENE WALLACE
Sharlene studied Classical harp with Judy Loman at the University of Toronto, Celtic
harp with Kim Robertson and Paraguayan harp with Alfredo Rolando Ortiz and Eralio Gill. Sharlene’s varied musical interests have
created unique collaborations with Classical, Avant Garde, world, jazz and blues musicians. Sharlene has performed across Canada,
the United States and France with such musicians as Susuan Piltch (flute, piano), Kim Robertson (Celtic harp), George Koller (bass),
Sal Ferreras (percussion), Kevin Muir (bass), Julie Michels (voice), Vivi Vicente (harpsichord).
Sharlene has won first place at both the Lyon & Healy International Pop & Jazz Lever Harp Competition in Tucson, Arizona and the
Concours d’Improvisation de Rencontres Internationales de Harpe Celtique in Dinan, France.
As well as being a busy session musician, Sharlene has created four independent CD’s “the rhyme & the river” , “Journey of Shadows”,
“Beyond the Waves” and “Island Mountain”. Among Sharlene’s compositions from these CD’s, four have been arranged for lever
harp and orchestra.
Sharlene plays in numerous orchestras across Southern Ontario including the Oakville and Kingston Symphony Orchestras.
As an educator Sharlene gives harp workshops across North America and is on faculty at York and Guelph Universities as well as at
the Royal Conservatory of Music’s World Music Centre.
