Chloë Hanslip on Naxos
NEW RELEASE - SEPTEMBER 2009
8.572078 HUBAY Violin Concertos Nos 1 & 2, Scènes de la Csárda Nos 3 & 4
Chloë Hanslip, violin • Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra • Andrew Mogrelia, conductor
Lauded as ‘the most charismatic violinist the UK has produced in recent years’, Chloë Hanslip has delighted music lovers with her Naxos
recordings of virtuosic 19th century music by Bazzini (8.570800) and Godard (8.570554), as well as the Violin Concerto by John Adams
(8.559302). Hubay’s first two Violin Concertos not only make full use of the violin’s singing qualities, especially in the gorgeous slow
movements, but require considerable virtuosity in performance. With their Hungarian folk-dance elements the Scènes de la Csárda are
among Hubay’s most famous works.
ALSO AVAILABLE
8.559302 ADAMS Violin Concerto / CORIGLIANO Chaconne from The Red Violin
Chloë Hanslip, violin • Charles Owen, piano • Royal Philharmonic Orchestra • Leonard Slatkin, conductor
The works on this disc offer a broad survey of American violin music. John Corigliano’s Chaconne is a set of variations based on his music
for the 1998 film The Red Violin, while George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 is a nineteenth-century fantasia on a traditional melody,
here in an arrangement by the Hollywood film composer Franz Waxman. Waxman’s own Tristan and Isolde Fantasia includes a demanding
obbligato piano part, and originally formed an emotional climax to the 1946 film Humoresque. The disc closes with John Adams’s hugely
popular Violin Concerto, a virtuosic masterpiece in which the soloist almost never stops playing.
‘This might be one of Naxos’ best recordings ever. Young British violinist Chloe Hanslip is outstanding on this fascinating solo
portrait CD, taking us through a range of eclectic and recent works.’ (Limelight)
8.570800 BAZZINI Virtuoso Works for Violin and Piano
Chloë Hanslip, violin • Caspar Franz, piano
Antonio Bazzini, born in Brescia in 1818, was one of the great violinist-composers of the 19th century. After encouragement from Paganini
following an encounter in 1836, he lived the life of a touring virtuoso for many years. Though he composed in larger forms, he is best
remembered as the composer of numerous salon pieces for violin and piano, the most famous being La Ronde des lutins (The Dance of the
Goblins), but also including many character pieces of various descriptions. Eventually returning to Italy, he was appointed first professor and
then director of the Milan Conservatory and was a teacher of Mascagni and Puccini.
‘Does Bazzini need rehabilitating? A resounding yes after this set of delights.’ (Gramophone)
8.570554 GODARD Violin Concerto No 2, Concerto romantique, Scènes poetiques
Chloë Hanslip, violin • Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra, Košice • Kirk Trevor, conductor
As a boy Benjamin Godard was a celebrated violin prodigy, but later turned to composition as his life’s work. With the notable exception of
the ever-popular Berceuse from the opera Jocelyn, the most of Godard’s works have fallen out of the repertoire. A thorough romantic in the
Schumann-Mendelssohn mould, Godard was best known for his short atmospheric pieces and stave works, while his short piano pieces
have recently garnered new respect. Two of his most successful longer works are the Concerto Romantique and the Violin Concerto No. 2,
both featuring deft virtuoso writing for the violin and the romantic sensibility of the mid-19th century.
4 STARS (Audiophile Audition)
‘the resplendent, youthful virtuoso Chloë Hanslip, would thrill concert audiences anywhere.’ (The Strad)
