Receiving the award on his behalf Dr L. Sankara Nethralaya's presence in the city of prosperity on Tamil New Year's Day on 14th April 2013 marked the culmination of a Special Economic Zone's dream to bring a human touch to its endeavour. The chanting of Vedas marked the auspicious beginning to the inaugural function followed by the ceremonial ribbon cutting by Dr.MYS.Prasad, Director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in the presence of the distinguished invitees, donors/supporters, well wishers, senior management and staff members.Speaking on the occassion Shri Ravi Sanna Reddy, MD, Sri City Special Economic Zone remarked that it was both the toughest and happiest day in his life as the 45 day challenge was completed with clockwork precision and thanked Dr S.S.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya for consenting to his request for a joint eye care initiative. The much awaited Chief Guest's address on the topic 'Eye care Research Mission'- Giving Light to the dark is God's mission” surpassed all expectations and was closely followed word to word by the gathering. The former President of India concluded his address by laying out the ideal role for doctors and social workers for the realization of vision 2020 goals and an oath for the ophthalmic community followed by an interactive Q&A session. eyelights June 2013 The embodiments of service and compassion pay a visit to Sankara Nethralaya It was a day of learning, inspiration and recapturing of old memories for the members of the Sankara Nethralaya family as two towering personalities Dr.N.Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus and Dr Natchiar, Director Emeritus, Aravind Eye Care Systems, known for their pioneering and compassionate work in the field of ophthalmology honoured Sankara Nethralaya with a visit on 9th February 2013 and shared their invaluable experiences. Dr Mohan Rajan, Head, Rajan Eye Care Hospital introduced Dr.N.Namperumalsamy's multifaceted personality, the learned doctor, the warm hearted human being and the architect of one of the greatest monuments of service of our times, by listing out his achievements and their recognitions in chronological order. Speaking on the topic 'Human resource”- Key factor for any successful eye care organization” Dr Natchiar, gave a most interesting talk on changing attitudes of patients and doctors to the sea changes in treatment methodology and healthcare delivery over the last 4 decades. Dr Natchiar observed that it is unfortunate that HR and its development do not get their due importance in healthcare. She highlighted that plush buildings and hi-tech equipment cannot be a substitute to the warmth and care shown by the attending doctors and staff members. Dr.N.Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus, Aravind Eye Care Systems, started with the thought provoking line that “Vision is not about what is possible but what may be possible”. Dr Dr.N.Namperumalsamy made it very clear that the medical profession is service driven and not money driven, he emphasized that the need of the hour is optimum utilization of human and infrastructural resources in a large and highly populated nation like India. He explained the outreach and self reliance and rural employment being created by Aravind in the rural pockets surrounding Madurai, the drug and contact lens manufacturing facilities and Aravind Eye Care's excellent self sustaining model. A powerful 'Book Reading' session of Insight draws high interest The brilliantly lit spacious hall at the Vivanta Taj Connemara, filled to capacity with enthusiastic audience, including members of the Madras Book Club and Sankara Nethralaya on the cool evening of Monday, the 4th Feb 2013, for a vibrant Book reading session of Sankara Nethralaya's “In-Sight”- A Passion for Compassion', shattered the myth that reading is slowly becoming a fading habit. The presence of eminent personalities Shri.Kalyanam, Former secretary to the Mahatma, Shri G.Sundaram, IAS, Shri Chandrasekhar a senior executive from L&T and Shri. Muthiah, Member, Madras Book Club, historian and newspaper columnist, underlined the diverse attention and interest that 'Insight' the subject matter of the day has drawn. Veteran Theatre Actor and Voice Artist Sri.P.C Ramakrishna, Noted Writer Smt.Uma Balasubramanian with Dr.Vasanthi Badrinath, Director, Clinical Services, Dr.S.S Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya at the Book Reading session Smt.Akila Ganesan, Senior General Manager, Sankara Nethralaya, welcomed and introduced the Chief Guest Smt.Uma Balasubramanian as a noted writer, and daughter of an illustrious father 'Vageesa Kalanidhi' Ki.Va.Jagannathan, a well known Tamil Laureate and editor of the Tamil magazine 'Kalaimagal'. Smt.Uma Balasubramanian is a recipient of the 'Life Time Achievement' award for her literary work 'Tamizh Saarndha Irai Pani'. Smt.Akila Ganesan introduced Sri.P.C Ramakrishna as having been the 'Voice' of Sankara Nethralaya from the 80s and who had an extensive career both with the All India Radio and Doordarshan as its premier and celebrated English news reader. Smt.Uma stressed the importance of the reading habit adding that it was interesting to note that the purpose of 'In-Sight' which was to generate funds for indigent eye care was so similar to the purpose of the institution it had attempted to portray. Shri.P.C.Ramakrishna presented the meticulously compiled excerpts of 'In-Sight' delivering it in his inimitable baritone observing that Sankara Nethralaya which was born blessed by the Paramacharyas of the Kanchi Mutt stands unique in its Philosophy, adding that its position yesterday, where it is now and where it would be in future are distinctly recorded in the book. He concluded his address with a note that Sankara Nethralaya today has challenges to retain its individuality, to focus on broader research objectives and deliver more. The Book reading session concluded with an interesting question and answer session with Dr.S.S.Badrinath. 4 The Kamalnayan Bajaj institute for research in vision and ophthalmology acquires cutting edge technology The 1st of March 2013 marked the reaching of a new milestone in its march towards achieving greater efficacy and accuracy in research through modernization and sophistication by the Kamalnayan Bajaj Institute for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. The day marked the inauguration of the Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscope by Shri Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice Chairman, Cognizant Foundation and the delivery of a most appropriate lecture on 'Advancing the frontiers of Medical knowledge' by Dr MK Mani, Chief Nephrologist, Apollo Hospitals. Shri Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice Chairman Delivering the welcome address Dr S.Bhaskaran, Cognizant Foundation at the FTIR inauguration Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya highlighted the human values ingrained in Dr MK Mani which made him a most worthy ideal to emulate, he also had a high word of praise for Shri Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Foundation which had funded the acquisition of the equipment, as a man who fully understood and empathized the criticality of research in the field of health care. Dr.Ronnie George, DirectorResearch, Vision Research Foundation, underlined the research studies in the fields of glaucoma, retinopathy and the developing of the twin surgical bus. He rued on the low priority and funding that research as an activity received in the country and attributed it for the low number of research findings. Dr MK Mani, Chief Nephrologist, Apollo Hospitals at the FTIR inauguration Delivering the Chief Guest's address Dr MK Mani laced his observations on the changing face of diagnosis and treatment and attitude of doctors with a generous mix of humour. He underlined that being a good medical professional either with a commercial or social objective demanded a good degree of skills, care, ability to teach and impart knowledge. He emphasized the need for corporate support of research and lauded the massive grants made by Mr. Bill Gates, the Founder of Microsoft Corporation as a shining example of support for research. The function came to an end with a warm vote of thanks by Dr S.Krishna Kumar, Head of the department, L&T Ocular pathology. The Union Bank of India makes a thoughtful and generous gesture The Union Bank of India has a place of pride among the nationalized banks in the country offering customer friendly service spanning 92 glorious years. It would be noteworthy to mention here that its Chairman and Managing Director Shri D. Sarkar was awarded the prestigious 'Banker of the Year Award' for year 2012 in January 2013, by the Skoch Consultancy Services. As a bank with a strong social commitment and a firm belief in giving back to the community, the bank chose 'Insight' the highly absorbing biography of Sankara Nethralaya whose sale proceeds go towards providing cost free eye care to visually impaired poor patients, as a corporate gift to its customers and purchased 100 copies of the same as part of its corporate service responsibility. The Assistant General Manager of the Bank's Industrial Finance Branch Shri R.Shyamsundar visited Sankara Shri R.Shyamsundar, Assistant General Manager, Nethralaya Main campus on 15th March 2013 and handed Union Bank of India along with Dr.S.S Badrinath, over the cheque towards the cost of the books to Chairman Emeritus and members of Sankara Nethralaya Dr SS.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya. Speaking on the occasion Shri R.Shyamsundar explained that the idea of reaching out to the poor and needy by choosing 'Insight' as a corporate gifting option and purchasing a good number of the same was the brainchild and initiative of Shri D.Sarkar, Chairman and Managing Director and Shri Ashok Gupta, Field General Manager, Union Bank of India. He expressed the Bank's pride and happiness in being able to participate in Sankara Nethralaya's charitable eye care initiatives. Dr S.S.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya expressed his profuse gratitude on behalf of Sankara Nethralaya and observed that it needs the wholehearted support of philanthropic individuals and corporate bodies like the Union Bank of India to fight its battle against blindness, aimed at banishing blindness from the face of the earth. He added that while the price paid by the bank towards the cost of the books would help in providing cost free eye care comprising transport, food and treatment including surgery to indigent patients, the distribution of the book across 100 plus readers would help in spreading the goals and philosophy of Sankara Nethralaya and win more champions like the Union Bank of India to its cause. 5 eyelights June 2013 The XII Dr E Vaithilingam Memorial Scientific session Enthusiastic participants at the XII Dr.E.Vaithilingam Memorial Scientific session conducted by ESO The XII Dr EV Memorial Scientific Session conducted recently at the Sri V D Swami Auditorium, Sankara Nethralaya had three hundred delegates from 11 optometry colleges located across the country enthusiastically participating in it. The proceedings started with an inspiring talk on “Social Accountability in health care education” the central theme of the session by Dr Anand Zachariah from CMC Vellore. This was followed by a thought provoking talk on “ Social accountability of Optometrists in Low Vision Care” by Dr Namita Jacob, from the Chetna Foundation which concluded with the famous quote “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” given by M K Gandhi leaving the audience highly impressed. Prof. Pichaimuthu, Professor of Principles of Lighting, ESO gave an interesting note on Dr. E. Vaithilingam and recalled his association and memorable experiences with the great man. The occasion witnessed the presentation of several papers and around 72 abstracts on varied themes such as Binocular vision, Low Vision, Contact Lens, Pediatric optometry & Visual acuity charts, Refractive error, Cornea, Cataract & External eye diseases, Innovations in Optometric education, Community eye care, Glaucoma and Retinal diseases. An expression of deep gratitude by a patient whose low vision improved significantly with the help of CCTV a low vision aid prescribed by the Low Vision Clinic at Sankara Nethralaya was a very touching moment. Ms. Rekha Srinivasan, B.S. Optometry final year student at the Elite school of Optometry won the Best Scientific presentation in the student category and Dr. Shrikant Bharadwaj, Associate Director of Optometry, L V Prasad Eye institute was selected for the same in the regular category. While Essilor India Private Ltd the optical major announced the sponsorship of travel grants for 10 eligible researchers beginning this year, companies like Vision Rx, Hoya, Vakil & co & Shoham Low Vision Aids sponsored the session. 19th Sri Mahaperiyava Aradhana and release of a divine CD The Sankara Nethralaya family observed its annual homage and thanksgiving to its patron saint and moving force the 'Mahaperiyava' of Kanchi to whose blessings it owes its inception and growth, on January 8th 2013. The Sri VD Swami Auditorium the venue of the 19th Mahaperiyava Aradhana was a picture of joy and piety with members of Sankara Nethralaya and a multitude of the Acharya's bhakthas assembling enthusiastically making the hall jam packed. The programme started with a captivating rendition of a song capturing the memory of the Sage by the highly talented Trichur brothers, accompanied with rare snippets of his life running on the screen, transferring his bhakthas to a world of ecstasy after which Dr. S.S.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya Sri Ahobila Math 46 Pattam Srimad Azhagiyasingar His Holiness Srivan extended a warm welcome to all those present. Ardent devotee of Satakopa Sri Ranganatha Yatheendra Maha Desigan Swami and Mahaperiyava and eminent speaker Shri S.Ganesa Sharma took Eminent religious speaker Sri.S.Ganesa Sharma offering prayers the audience on a fascinating story spanning more than 6 decades, tracing the genesis of Periyava Kural- God's own voice, a CD compilation of the Sage's commentaries on a broad spectrum of subjects during his Dig Vijayam to Madras in 1957-59 being released on the auspicious occasion. Delivering the keynote address, visiting Professor at the Harvard University, eminent Parliamentarian, President of the Janata party and staunch devotee of Mahaperiyava Shri Subramanian Swamy, gave a most interesting account of his experiences with the God who lived amongst us, how his words governed all his actions and the impact that these actions had on the world, his talk brought out the Mahaperiyava's involvement in the day to day developments of the world and his concern on the same. 6 The Elite School of Optometry captures the spirit of World Optometry Day World Optometry Day has always been an occasion for the Elite School of Optometry (ESO-run by Sankara Nethralaya in collaboration with Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani) to demonstrate its concern care for society. Right from its early days, ESO has taken small steps to create awareness about eye care among the public, through exhibitions, rallies, interactive sessions, competitions for schools and vision screening. This year, in a different move to raise awareness among the public on various ocular problems like Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma, a door to door campaign by the students of Optometry was arranged in the residential areas of Nanganallur on Sunday the 7th April 2013, between 9:00am and 11:30am. Student and faculty members of ESO went on a door to door campaign and explained about Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma, as the symptoms and critical implications of these conditions are yet to reach the public in large. Students of ESO actively participating at the awareness camp on World Optometry Day Imbibing the culture and value of “social accountability” from its alma mater Sankara Nethralaya, the Elite School of Optometry with its 140 members as 15 teams, spread the light of eye care awareness among 1020 families in Nanganallur. The Elite School of Optometry and Sankara Nethralaya conduct free eye camp for the public on the second Sunday of every month between 8.00 am. and 1.00 pm in the Nanganallur Anjaneya temple premises. Sankara Nethralaya conducts an intensive and informative workshop on Contact lens and systems The Contact lens department at Sankara Nethralaya conducted an in-depth workshop on the usage and impact of Contact lens. The workshop titled “Care, Clean and Comply to continue successful contact lens wear” was aimed at educating Contact lens practitioners on every aspect of Contact lens usage including tear biochemistry, microbiology and pharmacology of solutions and help them to decide on the materials and care regimen combination in a scientific manner. The session had insightful lectures on the various aspects of Contact lens usage by Dr.Mahalakshmi from the microbiology department, Dr.Angayarkanni from the biochemistry department and the Contact lens team of Dr.Rajeswari, Ms. Madhumathi, Ms Dr.M.Rajeshwari, In-charge, Contact Lens Department along with Sakunthala, Ms Raji, Mr. Biman Das and Ms. Karpagavalli. The enthusiastic participants at the Contact lens workshop workshop evoked enthusiastic response with participation by delegates from major eye institutions and Fellows from Sankara Nethralaya. Tele-Ophthalmology team conducts eye screening camp at Triplicane The Sankara Nethralaya Tele-Ophthalmology team conducted a vibrant Eye Camp jointly with the Uttaradi Mutt at the Ramanuja Koodam, Singarachari Street, Triplicane on the 27th of January 2013. The event started with the ceremonial inauguration of the camp by the Pontiff of the Uttaradi Mutt, His Holiness Sri Satyaatma Tirtha Swamiji in the presence of Dr.S.S.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Dr.Vasanthi Badrinath, Director, Clinical Lab and Dr K.S.Vasan, MD, Sankara Nethralaya. The Free Eye camp witnessed an overwhelming response despite the chilly morning, from members of the public keen to participate and benefit from it. Over 170 patients underwent comprehensive Eye check up at the camp of whom 32 were diagnosed His Holiness Sri Satyaatma Tirtha Swamiji at the camp as needing cataract surgery, 5 of whom were brought to the Sankara Nethralaya base hospital and treated absolutely free of cost and discharged the very next day.
