History MNK was founded in 1985 by Mervin Moore, AIA and is considered one of El Paso’s most respected
locally owned architecture firms. It is a full-service architecture firm that lives by a core set of values that garner
respect from the community, peer firms and clients. MNK has established itself as a service-oriented practice with
a diverse portfolio of projects in both the public and private sectors. Its portfolio includes projects in the health
care, education, recreation, religious, industrial, commercial and military fields. Through its years of unwavering
commitment to quality design and service to this community, MNK has established and enjoys a loyal client base.
MNK is proud of its history and continues to grow and develop new talents. The primary focus of MNK’s work is in
the El Paso southwest area known as the Paso del Norte Region. This high mountain desert region is an historic
trade route with a unique climate and culture which represents distinctive design opportunities. MNK also practices
throughout Texas and New Mexico with projects in Mexico as well.
Guiding Principles MNK has developed a design philosophy whose goal is to create facilities which express
the aspirations of their client and their client’s relationship with the community. Architecture can impose itself on a
community and as such MNK remains sensitive to each project’s cultural as well as geographic environment.
As long as there has been the profession of architecture there has been a debate regarding the balance of form and
function. MNK believes that unlike the pure art of sculpture, architecture is born from the need to fulfill a purpose
within a defined scope and budget. While it is not the intent to marginalize the role of aesthetics in architecture,
it should be recognized that whether you’re designing an operating room in a hospital or simply trying to keep
the rain off your head at a roadside rest stop, architecture has purpose. Additionally, in order for architecture to
be transformed from a design concept to realization through construction, economics are a reality that must be
embraced early in the design process.
As a Texas corporation whose roots are based in El Paso, Texas, the firm has developed a reputation as a talented
multifaceted architectural firm reflecting the multifaceted community which it grew from. The unique abilities of the
firm’s principals and their commitment to their profession and community have created a fusion which has sought
to develop an architectural vernacular reflecting its region’s rich history, culture, and industry as well as its high
mountain desert environment, geology, indigenous plants, and wildlife. MNK has a core commitment to its clients and
their community to work toward a lasting marriage between a building’s objective/functional requirements and the
subjective elements which become an expression of the client’s relationship and commitment to the community.
MNK believes that, in any project, the scope and budget are inextricably linked. One of the firm’s first objectives
will be to review and evaluate the client’s existing scope/budget and together formulate a combination which will
allow the project to move forward successfully. This process will be repeated throughout each of the design phases.
Although, as architects, we do not control the actions, safety, means or methods of the contractor, as a practice, we
often include a construction phasing outline with the construction contract bid documents in an attempt to reduce
claims and change orders. The phasing outline may depict overall sequencing and standards for construction barriers
and/or environmental control requirements. Finally, once the contractor’s bids are received, MNK works with the
owner to evaluate the bids and compare them to the design estimates.
Sustainable Design
An extension of MNK’s community sensitivity is sustainable design. The firm’s
commitment to sustainability pre-dates the current green movement.
Daylighting, solar orientation and energy efficiency have been core design principles from the time that Mervin
Moore, AIA designed the Sergeants Major Academy for Ft. Bliss, Texas. The Academy was designed by Mr. Moore
while he was still a principal at Fouts Gomez Moore Architects and featured natural reflected daylight through the
classrooms and corridors of the facility.
The lessons learned from the Sergeants Major Academy have been carried forward and retried over the years. Today
MNK is leading our community to a more sustainable environment by designing the first new construction project to
achieve LEED Certification in the El Paso region, Paso del Norte International Crossing Bridge.
Facilities are often designed around the requirements of the LEED rating system with the goal being to obtain LEED
certification. At MNK , however, we believe this approach fails to address the true essence of green building, which
is to minimize the long-term impact a facility can have on its surrounding environment, to enhance the experience
of a facility’s end users, and to maximize the efficiency of a building’s operations.
As a result, our knowledgeable staff focuses on the efficient integration of all building systems and components
within a facility to construct a truly environmentally friendly building. We analyze the design and materials to be used
during the design phase and offer suggestions for any applicable sustainable techniques that can be used. We then
analyze the plans to determine if any additional measures
need to be taken to ensure the desired LEED certification level.
Additionally, Renée Jiménez, AIA, LEED AP, CNU-A was instrumental in founding the local USGBC chapter, Chihuahuan
Desert and served as its Founding Chair and sits on the Board of the West Region Council.
Technology When the firm was formed in 1985 Mr. Moore made a commitment to embrace emerging
technological advances. At the time few firms had Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems. Mr. Moore committed to
100% CAD utilization to fully-exploit all of its benefits.
Since the firm’s early adoption of CAD, MNK has remained at the forefront of architectural technology. Today MNK is
developing major health care projects utilizing the latest Building Information Management (BIM) software available.
With BIM, MNK’s projects are designed 3 dimensionally, allowing for coordination and clash analysis with systems
and equipment before the project is constructed.
The firm has also successfully undertaken several technologically challenging projects as varied as the automated
access control system for an international airport, a newspaper printing facility, a 400,000 sq. ft. garment finishing
plant in Mexico and a pediatric intensive care unit. MNK understands that, while architecture is often about aesthetics
and identity, architects must be much more than sculptors or building decorators. A work of architecture often serves
a very specific purpose and must serve this purpose effectively and efficiently to allow its developers to bring it to
life and share it with the community.
The key to MNK’s commitment to providing functional and affordable facilities which contribute to their community, is
the direct continuous involvement of the firm’s most experienced staff (the firm’s principal architect/owners) in each
of their major projects. This commitment and involvement begins with the fact that the principals of MNK personally
design each of these projects rather than handing them off to staff as is customary practice. Additionally, one or
more of the principals maintains this commitment throughout the design and construction of the project. To allow
this direct involvement MNK has exploited current technology and developed its own systems where existing tools
do not exist.
To track and record volumes of information involved in many challenging architectural projects, MNK developed,
in-house, a document creation database system through which all project information flows and allows them to
record, track, and monitor all correspondence, faxes, transmittals, submittals, directives proposal requests, change
orders, field reports and other project related documentation. MNK also utilizes computerized accounting and project
management tools.
Principal Architects MNK’s principals have an aggregate of over 90
years of experience in practicing architecture in the Paso del Norte Region of
West Texas and Southern New Mexico. This experience includes a wide range of
building types, sizes and complexity as well as multiple delivery methods.
The key element to MNK’s commitment to providing functional and affordable
facilities which contribute to their community, is the direct continuous involvement
of the firm’s most experienced staff (its principal architect/owners) in each of its
major projects. This commitment and involvement begins with the fact that the
principals personally design each of these projects rather than handing them off
to staff. One or more of the principals maintains this commitment throughout the
design and construction of the project.

Experience MNK Architects, Inc. has developed expertise in multiple building/facility types. While some
facilities defy easy categorization or expand into multiple building types, what follows is a representative sampling
of MNK’s projects categorized as best they can be. These categories include; health care; educational ; institutional;
recreational; commercial/industrial; and houses of worship.
MNK has made strides toward becoming the dominant Health Care architectural firm in the El Paso Southwest.
Through strategic alliances, research and education MNK has gained health care experience including medical
offices, outpatient surgical centers, imaging centers, cancer treatment centers and major hospital projects. Health
care is an ever changing field and MNK continues to grow and learn with it.
MNK has successfully completed many types of Educational projects from elementary schools through university
projects. MNK is proud of its ongoing relationships with the local independent school districts, the University of Texas
at El Paso, the University of Phoenix, and El Paso Community College.
Institutional projects cover a wide range of facility types and experiences for MNK. The El Paso International Airport
is a good example of a large institutional repeat client for which MNK has completed several projects totaling around
$70,000,000. Other institutional projects include detention facilities for the County of El Paso, Hudspeth County and
Randall Counties in Texas. MNK also designed the Alamito Hope VI Project for the Housing Authority of the City of
El Paso. The Alamito Project is a 9 block redevelopment project near downtown El Paso, Texas. The redevelopment
project included the demolition of dilapidated structures and replaced with new construction of a single family, multi
family and elderly housing.
Recreational and community projects have allowed MNK to interject a little fun in their practice. From the nautical
themes of the SISD Regional Recreation Center to the challenge of designing a Bhutanese styled Swimming and
Fitness Center for the University of Texas at El Paso allowed MNK to express both fun and purpose.
MNK has designed a variety of specialized commercial and industrial projects. Some of the specialty facilities MNK
has successfully designed includes multiple banks for Wells Fargo Bank and the Government Employees Credit
Union, a Newspaper Printing Facility for the El Paso Times and a garment processing plant located in Meoqui, Mexico
for IGP/BGD. MNK has designed several office and retail facilities as well.
Designing Houses of Worship can be a source of great pride for architects. MNK has been fortunate to have been
commissioned to design a variety of religious facilities. MNK designed multiple facilities for the Catholic Diocese of El
Paso, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Abundant Living Faith Center.
As you can see, MNK has the ability to successfully design a broad range of building types. The firm not only has an
experienced and talented staff but also has developed the processes to allow them to focus their efforts on providing
their clients with a successful project. MNK works with the clients’ goals and aspirations through a project that meets
their budget and is an expression of that particular client.
MNK hopes to have demonstrated that our experience, expertise, and versatility makes us the choice
for your next project.
Health Care Architecture MNK has made strides toward becoming the leading health care architectural
firm in the El Paso Southwest. Through strategic alliances, research and education MNK has successfully completed
health care projects including medical offices, outpatient surgical centers, imaging centers, cancer treatment centers
and major hospital projects.
MNK’s health care clients have included hospitals such as the University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) and
Providence Memorial Hospital (PMH). At UMC MNK designed their Northeast Clinic Imaging and Rehabilitation
Center, Master Plan Implementation Project, and the UMC Existing Facility Modernization Project. MNK’s work at
Providence Hospital included the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Entrance Parking Structure, Children’s
Hospital Design Concept1 and East Campus Master Plan1.
The El Paso Cancer Treatment Center (EPCTC) is in an existing building which MNK redesigned for EPCTC through
multiple projects. These projects resulted in the expansion of the facility to include a state-of-the-art Varian 2100
accelerator for improved radiation and infusion therapy. All areas of the patient treatment floor and the business
offices were reevaluated and redesigned to improve patient and workplace flow.
MNK has completed several projects for the Texas Tech El Paso Health Sciences Center Clinic building. These
projects included the addition of a third floor to their existing building as well as several renovation projects which
encompassed nearly the entire existing building. All of these projects had to be designed to be constructed while
keeping the facility fully functional.
MNK has designed several private sector health care facilities as well including Medical Office Building (MOB) projects
for Sierra/Providence Health Network and Lincoln-Harris Properties, free standing physician office buildings, clinics
and pharmacies. One particularly challenging private sector project was the El Paso Day Surgery.
The El Paso Day Surgery2 project was an ambulatory outpatient surgical center constructed between two floors of
an existing office building. The facility includes 4 operating rooms, treatment rooms, prep and recovery areas as well
as administrative offices.
Health care is an ever changing field and MNK continues to grow and learn with it.

Educational Architecture An education can come from many differing experiences and environment.
Educational facilities therefore must come in a variety of architectural forms in order to serve the learning experience.
From pre-school through higher education MNK has successfully completed a wide variety of educational facilities.
MNK has also worked with traditional and non-traditional curriculum and educational environments. In order to meet
the challenges of varied educational facilities MNK has formed strategic alliances with other architectural firms where
it will benefit the project. Two projects where MNK formed architectural alliances are Americas High School1 for the
Socorro Independent School District (SISD) and Chapin High School1 for the El Paso Independent School District
(EPISD).
The (SISD) - Americas High School was designed as a series of pods, allowing for repetitive/economic space
arrangement. Five “houses” provided in a 2-story design will accommodate 500 students, each containing 12
traditional classrooms, teacher work areas, central multi-purpose area, a lecture hall and science lab facility.
The (EPISD) - Chapin High School was planned to include all educational, administrative and extra-curricular activities
for up to 2,100 students on a 50-acre site. Planning also included a “Magnet School” program for advanced studies
in math and science and a teacher’s academy for enhanced training of the district’s math and science.
Other public educational school projects include several elementary and middle school new campuses as well as
multiple renovation and addition projects. Recent examples include Moye, Lundy and Herrera Elementary Schools
for EPISD and a Combo Elementary & Middle School project for SISD. The SISD Combo School was designed as
independent 800 student elementary and middle schools with shared core facilities such as the kitchen (separate
cafeterias) library and computer center for all 1600 students.
Higher education projects designed by MNK include a new campus for the University of Phoenix, additions and
renovations to the existing University of Phoenix Campus, and University of Texas at El Paso Chemistry and Computer
Science Building2.

Institutional Architecture The principals of MNK have been commissioned to design a wide variety
of institutional facilities. These projects include; multiple projects at the El Paso International Airport; a nine block
redevelopment of downtown El Paso, Texas known as Alamito Hope VI; the Paso Del Norte International Border
Crossing1; multiple adult and juvenile detention facilities and the Sergeants Major Academy at Ft. Bliss, Texas.
MNK has successfully completed four major projects at the El Paso International Airport (EPIA). In 1990 MNK
was commissioned to completely redesign the entire passenger terminal and site passenger service areas. This
commission included the challenge of developing a new architectural vernacular unique to the Paso Del Norte
region drawing on the area’s rich cultural and environmental factors. The second major project at EPIA included the
establishment of a new administrative office area and shopping area within the old 1940’s portion of the passenger
terminal building. The third major project at EPIA was the Consolidated Passenger Screening Checkpoint Project. This
project was already under construction during the terrorist strikes on 9/11/2001. Through the proactive leadership
of the airport administration this project became an example for airport screening enhancements required around
the country following the terrorist strikes. The fourth and most recent project MNK has design for EPIA is the East
Concourse Expansion Project. This project expanded the public accommodations for its busiest concourse to include
retail spaces, a food court, gate hold rooms, a Wi Fi lounge, and additional restrooms.
The Alamito project was a HUD Hope VI redevelopment of El Paso’s oldest public housing project. All of the existing
structures in a nine block area were demolished and replaced with a mixed unit residential complex which houses
an elderly mid-rise building, elderly low-rise buildings, multi family apartments, single family housing, a community
center and an area for retail development.
The Paso Del Norte International Border Crossing is located in the heart of Downtown El Paso, Texas. This facility
houses all vehicular and pedestrian immigration and customs inspection facilities required of a modern international
port of entry into the United States. Additionally, this project was the first new construction project to achieve LEED
certification in the El Paso region.

Recreational Architecture
MNK has designed several recreational facilities including natatoriums, youth
service centers, fitness centers, and a fifty two lane bowling alley. Recreation facilities are a specialty building type that
can present some enjoyable architectural challenges. There are two particular examples, UTEP’s Natatorium and SISD’s
Regional Recreation Facility, which can be used to illustrate the architectural diversity created by the difference in a
client’s goals and aspirations. The UTEP Natatorium is the first major building structure in the development of a new
recreation park for the UTEP campus. The natatorium houses a zero-entry recreational pool, a lap and diving competition
pool, exercise room, and all related support facilities. The design challenge for this project was to create a functional
natatorium, with large glass windows within the fortress-like massing of the Bhutanese style of architecture.
The Socorro Independent School District (SISD) had a different vision for their regional recreation facility. SISD desired a
low maintenance yet fun and youthful appearing facility, which also reflected the building’s aquatic nature while working
within a tight budget. Both the UTEP and SISD facilities house separate indoor recreational and competition pools,
exercise rooms, locker rooms, and administrative support facilities. Additionally, the SISD facility possesses an outdoor
water park. MNK completed three design-build recreation facilities for the Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF) division of
the Department of Defense (DOD) consisting of two youth services facilities and largest bowling center within the NAF/
DOD housing fifty lanes. The U.S. Army MWR Division selected MNK for three successive family recreational facilities
at the Army Air Defense Center at Fort Bliss, Texas. These projects include the Post Bowling Center, the Main Youth
Services Center, and the Logan Heights Youth Services Center. The Bowling Center required total renovation of the
existing 26- lane bowling alley and related recreational activity areas, food service, daycare facilities, and the expansion
of the building to a 52-lane bowling alley with all other elements expanded and updated. At the time, this was the
largest bowling center within the Department of Defense. The Youth Services Center included gymnasiums; food service
facilities; youth lounges; administrative areas; and, multi-use recreational, educational and computer-based activity
rooms. Both include site development with landscaping, parking, playing fields, and courts.
Commercial Architecture
The principals of MNK have a broad range of experience with commercial and
industrial building types including shopping centers, banks, office buildings, food service facilities, manufacturing/
processing plants and warehouses.
The El Paso Times Printing Facility and the IGP/BGD Apparel Wet/Dry Finishing Facility represent our experience in
designing sophisticated manufacturing facilities in the United States and Mexico. The El Paso Times Printing Facility is
an expansion to the existing administration building that provides a 74,000 square foot production facility which houses
the El Paso Times’ new metrocolor printing press, offset presses, mail room and distribution center, newsprint storage
warehouse, and loading docks. IGP/BGD’s new Apparel Wet/Dry Finishing Facility is a major new denim stone-washing,
dyeing, drying and finishing project in Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico. This is a key component for the joint venture
partnership between Burlington Industries and International Garment Processors. MNK designed the heavy equipment
mounting, utility trenches, sophisticated temperature and humidity control systems, and an elaborate water reclaiming
and reuse process.
MNK has designed many bank projects for Wells Fargo Banks in El Paso, Texas and along the Texas / Mexico border.
In El Paso MNK created a unique architectural identity for the local branch banks. This identity has become their local
signature and has been carried through in seven local branch banks. MNK has also designed multiple banking facilities
for the Government Employees Credit Union.
MNK has designed several retail spaces including retail and office centers such as Redd Rock Shopping Center and Redd
Wind Village.
MNK also has experience in hospitality projects including the redevelopment of the Airport Holiday Inn Hotel and renovations
for the Airport Wyndam Hotel.
Houses of Worship
Designing Houses of Worship can be a source of great pride for architects. MNK has
been fortunate to have been commissioned to design a variety of religious facilities. MNK designed multiple facilities
for the Catholic Diocese of El Paso, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Abundant Living Faith
Center.
MNK projects for the Catholic Diocese of El Paso include St. Raphael Catholic Church and multiple projects for St. Luke
Catholic Church. St. Raphael Catholic Church project was a 1,000 seat sanctuary with a specially designed fan-shaped
plan that brings back pews to within 64 feet of the altar and lectern. St. Luke Catholic Church projects included a
new 900 seat Sanctuary, classroom buildings, a new courtyard and the most recent project includes a new Blessed
Sacrament Chapel and miscellaneous additions and renovations.
MNK has been commissioned by the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) to renovate, expand or remodel several
projects throughout New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. The list includes a total of 12 projects, 9 of which were in New
Mexico (Alamogordo, Truth or Consequences, Hatch, Carlsbad, Anthony and Las Cruces) and 3 in El Paso, Texas.
The Abundant Living Faith Center (ALFC) had a very ambitious plan with limited budget. MNK worked very closely with
the church to design a facility which made use of a variety of construction techniques incorporating volumetric control
of all portions areas of the design to maximize the project’s budget. The result is a large complex of buildings housing
a 3,600 seat theatrical quality main sanctuary, a 650 seat children’s church and a 600 seat teen church known as One
Eighty. Additionally, the facility houses twenty four nursery rooms, four large conference/classroom spaces, four coffee
shops, a bookstore, fellowship areas and full audio and video production and recording studios.

The projects were designed to transform the existing sterile and cold treatment
facility into a more welcoming, user friendly, comfortable, and caring environment.
All patient treatment and exam areas were completely remodeled and altered to be
more sensitive to the needs of the cancer patients and their families so the patient
and family can focus on healing.
Phase I consisted of adding and converting the space on the 1st level of this 3-story
facility into administrative and business offices responsible for the daily operations
of the treatment center.
In Phase 2, the entire 2nd- level was remodeled to include a new state-of-the-art
linear accelerator. In addition, the patient flow patterns for the existing 2 accelerators
and X-ray equipment were redefined.
Phase 3 consisted of adding more examination rooms to the 3rd floor and additional
office space on the 2nd floor for physicians.
The completed project transformed this facility into a complete full-service cancer
treatment facility where each patient receives treatment under one roof by the
experienced staff. It includes all the amenities necessary for chemotherapy infusion
treatment, radiation therapy and oncology management. All three phases of the work
were planned and phased so that the facility remained in full operation throughout
the construction activity, minimizing the effects on staff and patients

This 25,000 sq. ft. facility was designed to replace the organizations’ existing facilities
that were housed in a group of connected buildings, some of which were over 50
years old. A unique element of this building are the gracious north lining windows
which not only serve as a major design element for the interior and exterior of the
building, but also provide an abundant view and daylighting making efficient use
of the natural sunlight throughout the day. The building was designed to create
shading for the south-side windows as well.
This new facility encompasses a community blood and blood products collection
center. Included are reception areas, interview rooms, and screening rooms. The
collection and post-collection areas are designed to be bright, cheerful, comfortable
settings for the donors. The product processing, testing, and storage areas include
provisions for state-of-the-art lab equipment and furnishing and 40 degrees cold
storage areas. The remainder of the facility includes the administrative and community
relations functions. Also incorporated in the facility is a 1,300 sq. ft. training room,

El Paso Chemistry & Computer Science Building
This $69.2 million project includes master planning the science and engineering
neighborhood, assessing facilities, analyzing programmatic relationships and
designing a master plan for the future development of the science and engineering
quad as well as the design of a new interdisciplinary science and engineering building.
The engineering neighborhood master plan served to:
• Explore the alternatives for the new Physical Sciences/Engineering Core Facility
that best respond to positive campus attributes and reinforce relationships to existing
and future buildings.
• Establish design principles for new building renovation, landscaping and site
developments that codify and enhance the University’s commitment to the aesthetic
elements of Bhutanese/Himalayan architecture.
• Identity enhancement areas within the Physical Sciences/Engineering Campus
Neighborhood, to best create places of interaction study and relaxation for students,
faculty and staff.
•Improve campus way-finding within the Physical Sciences Engineering Campus
Neighborhood for a pedestrian-oriented environment.
• Explore future development sites based on a projected 20 year growth plan for
Physical Sciences/Engineering teaching and research facilities to ensure proper
integration with the existing campus neighborhood, urban fabric and the UTEP
Master Plan.
The project provides approximately 147,543 sq. ft of state-of-the-art interdisciplinary
teaching and research laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices. This facility
doubled the existing outdated laboratory teaching and undergraduate research
space that was housed in a 40 year-old Physical Sciences Building.
The departments of chemistry and computer science and interdisciplinary core
facilities for material science and engineering as well as environmental science and
engineering are now located in the new building. It contains 25-30 instructional
laboratories, lecture support space, undergraduate and graduate research space, and
necessary office space. The new facility provides convenient access to supporting
instructional and laboratory infrastructure housed in adjacent engineering and

The Paso Del Norte Port Of Entry – Expansion project will always be known to the
entire El Paso community as a milestone, the first LEED-NC certified project in El Paso
County. This project serves as an example to many in the community who have
been striving for the LEED certification. The design intent of this project successfully
demonstrates that it is possible to create a fully functional building that is highly
water efficient, enjoyable and healthy to work in and travel through, architecturally
pleasing, and reduces its short-term and long-term impact on resources and the
environment. This port of entry is shared by two countries, Mexico and the United
States. It serves approximately 22,720 pedestrians daily and will remain a visible
example to all of sustainable design.
The name says it all – Paso Del Norte Port of Entry. The project is the pass to the
north port of entry bridge one of the two largest ports from Mexico to the US located
in El Paso. As the population and the need to commute to and from El Paso have,
grown the need to expand the bridge has also grown. The expansion included new
vehicular lanes and almost doubled in size the existing 30,309 sq. ft. administration
building by providing 25,955 sq. ft. of additions to the building, including a 14,311
sq. ft. dog kennel to house 60 canines at the northeast end of the facility. The
existing dog kennel building will be renovated to create office space for Immigration
and Customs Enforcement agents. Other changes include the construction of a bus
lane next to the administration building, a new TABC kiosk and booth, and enhanced
parking and access.

The original intent of this project was to combine the passenger screening functions
of the individual concourses into a single consolidated security checkpoint to improve
resource and manpower utilization and to provide a comfortable waiting area for
individuals and families greeting arriving passengers. A key element of this project
was the re-roofing of 185,000 sq. ft. of the existing terminal building. PSI was the
roofing consultant to MNK. A new high-quality, more energy conserving roof replaced
the existing traditional built-up roof. The design of this project was underway prior
to the events of 9/11/2001 and the establishment of the Department of Homeland
Security and the Transportation Security Administration. Therefore this is one of
the first passenger screening areas newly constructed with the involvement and
assistance of these new federal departments.

An early example of “green architecture” in El Paso is the 1985 award winning
Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. Mervin Moore, principal architect was
given the direction by the Commanding General of Fourth Army to design a naturally
daylighted campus and to do a value analysis of the heating and cooling system.
In collaboration with Ben Evans, FAIA, author of Daylighting in Architecture, the
buildings were designed to provide daylighting in all but those areas requiring strict
lighting controls such as the audiovisual studio and the large and small auditorium.
Following analysis of appropriate cooling systems, a central air-wash evaporative
cooling system was incorporated into the design. Changing weather patterns would
require additional analysis the effect of environmental conditions before reaching a
valid conclusion today.

After outgrowing their existing church, Pastors Charles and Rochelle Nieman of the Abundant
Living Faith Center commissioned MNK Architects to assist in the design and of a new
sanctuary. The scope consisted of a +3,500 seat auditorium, a Teen Assembly space, and
a Kids Church all complemented by a Christian bookstore, a game room and nursery areas.
MNK’s design intent for the Abundant Living Faith Center’s new sanctuary required that we
provide a facility adequate for their growing congregation, coordinate state of the art audio
and visual technology, integrate the functions of a teen assembly, game room, classrooms
and coffee shops into an aesthetically pleasing environment but maintaining a balance
between faith, form and function. MNK believes that we successfully accomplished our
intent and ultimately provided the pastors with a building they could be very proud of.
MNK assembled a team of professional engineers and specialty consultants which included
Alegro Engineering (M/P); Borunda & Associates (electrical); Navarro & Associates
(structural); SLI, Inc. (civil); Desert Elements (landscaping); and PLA Designs (theatrical
lighting specialty consultant).
PLA Designs, the specialty consultant provided an invaluable service by coordinating the
acoustical design and several different disciplines to design a state of the art audio and visual
system for ALFC.

The new sanctuary for St. Luke Catholic Church is an addition to an existing site
which contained a multi-purpose building and an office building. The new facility
seats 900 people within the main sanctuary plus an additional 150 in the daily
chapel and the bride’s room. Full height windows in the walls adjoining the daily
chapel and the bride’s room to the sanctuary and an extension of the public address
system allow these areas to serve as overflow for the main sanctuary. The sanctuary
features a 180 degree radial pew arrangement so that none of the pews are more
than about 55 feet from the altar platform. The pew arrangement and upholstery
combined with the interior design of oak and mahogany wainscoting are intended to
lend a warm and intimate feel to the large gathering area. The altar platform bathed
in the warm glow of natural daylight from clerestory windows located in the tower
directly overhead. The backdrop for the altar is a freestanding wall with a large cross
at its center. This wall is made of coarse block at its outer edges which transitions
to smooth honed tile then a polished tile and ultimately the polished stainless steel
crucifix which floats 18” above the altar platform. Behind the altar are four large
stained glass windows arranged to depict a large central cross with mullions further
dividing the lower windows into 2 additional crosses to complete the trilogy. At the
sanctuary’s west wall there are 7 windows flanking each side of the altar platform.
These windows will house stained glass depictions of the 14 Stations of the Cross. As
these are west facing windows, a curved screen wall was constructed at the exterior
to provide solar shading while still allowing natural daylight to glow through.
