WELCOME TO THE CAMDEN FRINGE 2016
Hello
You are looking at the brochure of events for the 2016 Camden Fringe. Whether you are a
seasoned Camden Fringe goer, or a newcomer who has stumbled across this brochure and is
thinking “I didn’t know Camden had a Fringe”, we invite you in to have a look and are confident
you will find at least one thing of interest within our programme of events.

2016 marks the 11th year of the Camden Fringe. Can you believe it? Our little baby is now 11 and
ready to go to big school and have its head flushed down the toilet. We definitely feel like one of
the big kids now, but are still intimidated by the likes of Edinburgh, Brighton and Buxton Fringes
who lurk around the back of the gym smoking and looking like real grown-ups.
Since we started there have been a
proliferation of new Fringe festivals
springing up across the UK and across
London. If you are interested in this sort
of thing do also seek out the following in
the capital:
• Illuminate Festival, Wimbledon (May)
• Wandsworth Fringe (May)
• East London Fringe Festival (July)
• Phoenix Fringe (Aug - cheeky)
• Clapham Fringe (Oct/Nov)
• London Horror Festival (Oct)
• Lewisham Fringe Festival (Nov)
(Don’t be confused by the Edmonton
and London Fringes, both of these are in
Canada, although if you do find yourself
in the area...)
Thanks for your interest and support.
Now stop reading this bit and get looking
at the wonderful entertainment on offer!

Judith leaves her ex-boyfriend a desperate

message on his answerphone saying that she
theatre
is not coping with their break-up, that she has
brought some razor blades and some henna in
order to either slash her wrists or dye her hair
and she might be pregnant. However, it is his
new partner, Ros, who hears the message and it
is she that rushes to Judith’s bedsit.
An evening of emotion, combined with subtle humour, ensues that will
conclude with the two women, despite their differences and rivalry, finding
friendship and gaining something positive from each other.

Set in a Further Education college, this team
respond to government budget cuts and an
appalling Ofsted inspection by self-serving selfpreservation and fraud. The play tracks the new
man, Nigel, from his first day. What follows is a
darkly comic series of events. His enthusiasm genuinely to put students at the
heart of everything will surely make a difference, won’t it?

What The Letty Butler Saw
Absolute bell-end Letty Butler; vaguely known as the weaker half of
“charmingly anarchic breakthrough double act” LetLuce, is having a bash
at stand up. No-one knows why, least of all her. Expect highbrow political
debate & you’ll be livid. Expect bad chat about her paltry existence & an
average anecdote involving her mum’s nipple & you’ll be fine.
Happy Hour Comedy Club
Harun Musho’d: Harun With A View
Harun Musho’d jokes about a wide range of subjects including UKIP,
FIFA, his dad (dead, so can’t sue for slander), Take a Break, music
journalism, the gym, Boko Haram, other family members (mostly still alive
and taking him to court), Nazis, suicide, bombers, his day job, religion,
Switzerland, Alvin and the Chipmunks and cake. A work-in-distress.
Tales of Enchantment
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
“Your father should be as a god.”
Hermia loves Lysander. Lysander loves Hermia. Except, Lysander is a
girl. And Hermia’s father has other ideas.
Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy about the capriciousness of love
is used to explore the social pressure faced by women to conform, & to
show that our truest self is most often in our dreams.

ghost of a betrayed friend. Their performance evokes a living nightmare, as
tortured characters appear in the darkness to the beat of Hecate’s drums.

Canal Cafe Theatre
You are cordially invited to one man’s wedding/
performance.
theatre
“You know me better than I know myself” is a
phrase that’s often used as flattery, but quite
frankly is a lie. Except in this case. The tradition is one stag do, one wedding,
one couple, however this is not your traditional story.
Very, very loosely based on true stories of self-marriages, John Tissiman
(Actor and Co-Writer) invites you to his tragically comical wedding; a
celebration of one man’s ultimate dedication to the one person who has been
with him from the very beginning.
With influence from Mr Bean and Ace Ventura, The Day I Married Myself
wonderfully mixes physical theatre, innuendo, mime, and naturalism
underscored by a carefully selected wedding playlist.

Martins and stuff like the BBC.
This time Elaine does herself.
Andrew Bird: I Knew This Would Happen
Andrew knew this would happen. That he would end skint married

Lear is on the heath, left alone to once more think about that fateful day,
retold through the words of Shakespeare.
Now he has just one hour to decide what his future holds...

What’s your view of Oscar Wilde? This new play

He was an A class celebrity. SUCH SUCCESS!
Although the play has some surreal aspects it strives to be loyal to the history.
The play employs the notion that Oscar Wilde was always an actor on a stage
wherever he happened to be at the time; HE, yes HE was the playwright
and producer rather than Roger Clark; HE the director rather than James
Holdsworth, HE the audience rather than you of The Play That Is Oscar Wilde:
he wished to be in every part of it, to miss nothing, not even Court cases. A

Romeo and Juliet, probably the best known love
story in the world, addresses the theme of love

theatre
individuals taunt and spew accusations and
insults at each other, sticks and swords are
drawn at the drop of a hat and the atmosphere
of Verona — or London or any city in our troubled world — you can cut with
a knife.
How can love like Romeo’s, like Juliet’s, be born and live in such an
atmosphere? It seems impossible and yet it does. But it dies, too young. And
yet it transforms the hate, the violence and aggression. The deaths can give
us hope that we, too, can change ourselves and, by changing ourselves,
make change happen around us.

Royal Hunter is a fictional account of the day that
Ellen Chivers achieved her life-long ambition and
(concs £5)
met Prince Harry through the social dating site,
comedy
Tinder. After Harry ‘swipes to the right’ on her
picture, we follow the progress of their budding
relationship.
But when it’s time to meet the family, Ellen struggles with the unfamiliar
Royal environment; getting trampled by corgis, sitting in Philip’s chair and
mentioning the unmentionable: The Great Fire of Windsor in 1992.
This comedic, one-woman show was born through Ellen’s genuine and
irrational love of all things Royal.
Using bizarre, hypothetical situations and modern social references,
Monarchists and Republicans alike will revel in the silliness of this rather
unlikely tale.

Hen and Chickens
22-25 August 9pm
Brilliantly funny and original comedy from
London’s very own Dave J Long who uses his
charmingly Dickensian working class accent and
wit to make you laugh ‘til you cry.
His show consists of observational stand-up
comedy sewn to a few adult jokes, pieced to
some slightly humorous obscure references,
stitched to some autobiographical anecdotes all
put together into a blanket of comedy wrapped
around the audience with no political agenda, just jokes.
Adam is an everyday scoundrel. A man no
different to thousands of others except for one
theatre
thing — he tells us what he really thinks. We hear
his justifications for watching porn, his tactics for
getting antidepressants from his GP and how
he resents his emasculating fiancée Amy. It’s
his crush on Amy’s little sister Roman though,
that truly steers him into dangerous waters. The
younger woman piques his interest when he discovers her ‘sex blog’ and, as
he’s drawn towards her, Adam must bring his A-game of avoidance, stalling
and deception to stop Amy discovering the kind of person he really is.
This Man Right Here is a dark, funny, relatable new play which asks if ordinary
men have an inner-rogue or whether, in fact, it’s best not to look.

The 12th Camden Fringe will be upon us
31st July - 27th August 2017
The programme of events will be announced and tickets on sale on 1st June 2017.
Are you feeling inspired and think you would you like to take part next year?
We are happy to host all sorts of performances in all sorts of spaces, as
long as they are in (or are very close to) the Borough of Camden.
We take applications from the 1st January to the 31st March.
You need to negotiate with venues and have secured a performance slot by
the end of April so you can send us all your show information to go in the
brochure by the start of May.
For more information and the 7 Steps to Taking Part in the Camden Fringe
please see the TAKE PART page of our website.
Do you have a venue that would like to host shows at the next Camden
Fringe? Get in touch and let us know!
2016 marks 400 years since the death
of William Shakespeare and we have a
number of Shakespearean productions and
pieces inspired by The Bard participating
in the Camden Fringe this year.
Scholars will be able to identify
these with our handy symbol:
