“UNTO THESE HILLS” SIGNS MARION WAGGONER TO DIRECT 2013 PRODUCTION
Marion Waggoner has signed on to direct Cherokee Historical Associations production of
“Unto These Hills” in Cherokee, NC for the 2013 season. John Tissue, Executive Director of the
Cherokee Historical Association said “Marion brings a wealth of experience to the company
and we are excited and looking forward to him joining our team.” Waggoner produced and
directed the long running outdoor drama Tecumseh! in Chillicothe, Ohio from1986 until his
2009. He has spent many years researching Native American History including tribes such as
Cherokee, Shawnee, and Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. Marion served as a consultant to
the Reservation Superintendent in formulating a marketing plan for all tribal enterprises for
the Alabama-Coushatta Tribes of Texas. In addition to his love of Native American culture and
history, Marion has produced and or directed outdoor dramas like “Tecumseh!,” “Blue Jacket,”
“Beyond the Sundown,” “Hatfields and McCoys,” “The Legend of Daniel Boone,” and “Simon
Kenton.”
Waggoner is actively sought to consult and advise numerous theatrical and tourism related
businesses. Some of his clients have included the Cherokee National Historical Society in
Tahlequah, OK, The Paul Green Foundation, The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Legend, Waco
Historic Foundation and North Star Productions. His accolades are many and include the
national Mark R. Sumner Award, Lifetime Trustee Award through the Scioto Society, Inc., Ohio
Division of Travel and Tourism for outstanding contribution to tourism development for the
state of Ohio, twice awarded the Kentucky Colonel for contributions in the fields of cultural
and tourism development and Jaycee's Person of the Year Award.
In a recent conversation with Waggoner about the upcoming season he said “I’m sincerely
honored to have the opportunity to work with Unto These Hills and the Cherokee Historical
Association. The show has become one of ‘the Crown Jewels’ within the outdoor drama
industry. The story of the Cherokee is a powerful and important story for all of us, because it
creates an opportunity to better understand ourselves through an understanding of their
culture, struggles and triumphs.”

The Institute of Outdoor Drama was founded in 1963 to serve the rapidly expanding field of outdoor drama.
Originally located at UNC-Chapel Hill, it is now housed in the College of Fine Arts and Communication at East
Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Since its inception, the Institute’s scope has grown to include a wide variety of
theatrical organizations around the world who perform in outdoor settings including Shakespeare festivals,
historical dramas, religious dramas, renaissance festivals, dramatic and musical theatre. These organizations are
united by their dedication to producing outstanding theatre in outdoor settings and their unique roles in providing
exceptional entertainment and tourism attractions for their region.
