OPEN AUDITIONS
Monday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Rehearsals begin:
Monday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m.
Director: Chip Morris
Performance dates:
March 20 – April 13, 2014
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Chip Morris
Chip Morris is an actor, director, entrepreneur, and a Sales Consultant at Ford/Lincoln of Ocala. His wife, Mary, has
too many shoes, but he loves her anyway. Chip is the Voice of The Kingdom of the Sun Concert Band and the resident
Emcee for The Circle Square Cultural Center. He has appeared in or directed more than 60 local theatrical
productions, and encourages everyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to perform in a play to come to
auditions. It’s a great experience, and The Odd Couple is a ton of fun!
ABOUT THE SHOW
Ocala Civic Theatre is a special place where amateurs, those who participate based on passion rather than
pay, can play. We encourage anyone who has entertained thoughts about “treading the boards” to come to auditions
for The Odd Couple for the start of a theatrical journey that will culminate in 20 performances of this delightful comedy.
There’s a reason Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple is a classic: Not only is there scarcely a moment in the play that isn’t
hilarious, but in the usual Simon style there are also fresh and unexpected insights into human nature. The thing about
the show is its timelessness. Sure, we’re showing you 1965, but these characters still exist today. They are still
relatable. Simon’s writing is timeless. The Odd Couple is a bromance gone bad. For example, at Oscar’s weekly poker
game, we learn that Felix is suddenly missing and possibly suicidal:
Murray: A suicide telegram? Who sends a suicide telegram?
Oscar: Felix, the nut, that's who! Can you imagine getting a thing like that? She even had to tip the kid a quarter.
When Felix finally appears, all the guys try to cheer him while also humorously attempting to prevent his
further suicide attempts. In a gesture of friendship and solidarity, Oscar offers his spare room to Felix, and that’s when
the trouble begins. As a New York Times review puts it, “The humor of The Odd Couple is rooted in watching ordinary
guys, equipped with an extraordinary arsenal of zingers, turn each other into irreconcilable caricatures of themselves,
the way people do in bad marriages.”
ROLES AVAILABLE
Roles are available for six men and two women. The fabulous and eclectic cast of real characters include:
 Oscar Madison: A recently divorced sportswriter who seems to enjoy life to the fullest. Oscar is a slob whose
carefree attitude is evident in the sloppiness of his household, but it seems to bother others more than him.
 Felix Ungar: A newswriter whose wife has just thrown him out of the house. He is deeply depressed over the
end of his marriage. Tense, nervous, and fussy, he is a hypochondriac and a neurotic neat-freak.
 Gwendolyn and Cecily Pigeon: These sisters are Oscar and Felix’s upstairs neighbors. Attractive and
undoubtedly British. Cecily is divorced; Gwendolyn is a widow. Both are secretaries.
Oscar’s poker buddies:
 Murray: An NYPD police officer. Slow and methodical.
 Speed: Gruff, sarcastic, impatient. Often picks on the others.
 Roy: Oscar’s accountant. Has a dry wit, but less sharp-tongued than Speed.
 Vinnie: Mild-mannered and henpecked. An easy target for Speed’s verbal barbs.

Director: Fred Mullen
Performance dates:
April 3 – 11, 2014
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR: Fred Mullen
Fred Mullen’s association with Ocala Civic Theatre began in 1977 when he was cast as a Muleteer in Man of La
Mancha, leading to a lifelong passion for theatre. Since then he has been involved in more than 100 productions as an
actor, director, stage manager, and set designer. Favorite roles include Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof, King Arthur in
Camelot, Don Quixote in Man of of La Mancha, Norman Thayer in On Golden Pond, Frank in Over The River and
Through the Woods, Angus in The Drawer Boy, Sigsbee Scruggs in Sigsbee, Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady,
Parker Ballentine in Critic’s Choice, and Judge Francis Biddle in Trying. Directing credits include A Streetcar Named
Desire, The Champagne Charlie Stakes, Death In England, The Foursome, Footsteps of Doves, Sylvia, and Ralphie
and the Star-Maker. Having retired to Tennessee, Fred is excited to return to OCT and says, “Ocala is very fortunate to
have a facility of this caliber. I am delighted to again be part of it, and to work with old friends and greet new ones.”
ABOUT THE SHOW
If the setting of an English farce could be transferred to a retirement community golf course in Florida, Spreading It
Around would easily fit the bill. Wealthy widow Angela Drayton has retired to Florida to enjoy her golden years.
Spoiling her sunshine are greedy son Larry and his superficial shopaholic wife Traci, who feel entitled to Mom's money
to maintain their materialistic lifestyle. Angela, tired of bankrolling this unappreciative pair, has a brilliant idea. With the
help of her neighbor Martin, she establishes the S.I.N. (Spending It Now) Foundation to redirect her nest egg to
worthier recipients in genuine need – and campaigns for other seniors to do the same. While Angela and Martin
gleefully burn through their investment portfolios, Larry and Traci, terrified of losing their inheritance, connive a
desperate scheme of deception to have Angela committed. Will this deplorable duo get what's coming to them… one
way or another? This light-hearted comedy is both funny and relevant, spreading laughs as well as life lessons.
ROLES AVAILABLE


Angie Drayton: The widow of a workaholic husband who left her with considerable financial security.
Resourceful, well-educated, exudes class. Attractive, likable, caring, active. Late 50s to 70s, but will ideally
play in the 60s range.
Martin Wheeler: Fit, well-preserved, mid-60s to mid-70s. A former CEO, bored with retirement, has taken on
handyman chores for his neighbors. A widower, cynical about life since his wife’s death. Avoids interaction
with almost everyone except Angie, the only person with whom he feels he can relate.
Larry Drayton: Angie’s son. Has little interest in anything, save his own agenda. An arrogant, self-important
man who pays little attention to his mother except when he is in need of financial help. Married to a woman
who is like-minded. Mid-30s to late 40s.
Tracy Drayton: Larry’s wife. Domineering, equally self-absorbed. A fashionista. Mid-30s to mid-40s.
Dr. Krapinsky: A psychiatrist. Can be any age or gender. Serious-minded, perhaps even a bit self-indulgent,
yet practical in his/her approach to resolving problems.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!
Think you might have 45 spare minutes in your day or evening sometime from February 6 through March 2?
Want a really easy volunteer gig? Then call volunteer coordinator Craig James at (352) 236-2274, ext. 102,
and tell him you want to help sell tickets for the annual Get Up ‘N Go Drawing! Don’t worry, you don’t have to
give a sales pitch. At every performance of Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, someone
else will give the curtain speech about the Get Up ‘N Go Drawing, one of our best annual fundraisers. All you
have to do is go up and down the aisles to pass out entry tickets and collect money from those who raise
their hands. Volunteers for evening performances are needed from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Volunteers for
matinees are needed from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. If you have tickets to see the show, you can even volunteer to
help with Get Up ‘N Go Drawing at that same performance. However, if you are already scheduled to
volunteer in another area during a specific performance (ushering, Gift Box, etc.), you will not be able to
volunteer to sell Get Up ‘N Go tickets for that performance. Come help us with Get Up ‘N Go… you’ll be glad
you got up and went!
