The Award Winning Season, our
85th, is humming along.
By the time this newsletter
hits the streets, the Children’s
Theatre Project has wowed their
audiences with choreographed
fight sequences and amazing
costumes and masks that
brought The Lion, The Witch
and the Wardrobe to life.
The Pajama Game team is
in full swing, complete with
Latin dance sequences and
Kathy among the other phantoms in A Christmas Carol great singing. And the Boeing,
Boeing and the Doubt teams
are pulling together their production crews. If you want to get involved, please
contact any Board member.
We are still looking for committee chairs for Nominating (help find next year’s
officers), Annual Meeting (organize the annual meeting in June) and Publicity
(help keep our name out there and publicize the season). Please contact me at

As of this writing, THE LION , THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE is three weeks away from showtime, so we’ll
have an update and pictures in the next BackStage! We’ll also have more info on the February Vacation Theatre Camp,
but we CAN tell you it will be the musical BUGSY MALONE, JR.! This show is based on the movie from the 1980’s
starring Jodie Foster and Scott Baio…look it up online for more on the story…it’s real fun!

AN ARTS SCHOLARSHIP FOR
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Ella & Harold Brehm Arts Scholarship is open to all graduating seniors (traditional and home school students alike)
who have participated in some capacity with the Children’s Theatre Project and intend on either majoring or minoring in
some form of Arts either at a traditional or non-traditional school.
If you are interested in this scholarship, please write an essay describing your involvement with CTP, why you should be
considered for this scholarship and your academic plans for the future.

TWO THEATRE WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS
Two workshops specifically targeted for kids will be offered in the spring of 2013.
1. AUDITIONING
Learn how to bring character, movement & emotion into your audition songs and monologues with help from
experienced directors. Make your audition distinctive so that
The audition panel can’t help but remember you when it comes time for casting.
2. IMPROVISATION FOR KIDS
Learn how to make it up on the spot! This workshop will help kids develop skills to think on their feet and improve their
future performances by using theatre games and having fun!

Auditions for the non-stop comedy “BOEING BOEING”
December 2 & 3!
Award-winning comedy reaches new
heights when the Community Players’
production of the international smash
“BOEING BOEING” takes off on the
Audi stage on Valentine’s weekend,
February 15, 16 and 17, 2013. Marc
Camoletti’s 1960 French farce has been
around the world more than once, landing
in London in 1962 and 2007, New York
in 1965 and 2008, and translated into
numerous languages, making it “the most
performed French play throughout the
world” – according to the Guinness Book
of Records!
The plot concerns playboy architect
(Bernard) who keeps three fiancées (all
airline hostesses) “up in the air” flying in and out of his chic Paris bachelor pad – all with the aid of an airline schedule
and an overworked French maid (Berthe) as air-traffic control. All is well until the arrival of his innocent college chum
from Wisconsin (Robert), who’s forced to manage the mix-ups when schedule changes bring all three girls to Paris at the
same time! Here’s the full flight list:
Bernard – Handsome playboy architect, suave, charming, confident and unruffled – until the girls begin arriving! Physical
comedy. (Looks 25-40)
Robert – Bernard’s college pal from a small town in Wisconsin. Out of sync with the swinging Sixties – but eager to
make up for lost time in the City of Love. LOTS of Physical comedy. (Looks 25-40)
Berthe – Robert’s passive-aggressive Parisian maid. Considers herself above everyone else, but not above complaining
about the work or the messy situation at hand. (Looks 35-50)
The three Air Hostesses (remember it’s the 1960’s) must look to be in their 20’s – be able to wear, walk and move well in
heels and fitted skirts. Looks, personality, projection and a talent for accents, verbal and physical comedy are all required:
Gloria – from Texas. Seems like a ditzy American with a taste for mis-matched comfort foods (ketchup and pancakes) –
she secretly has three fiances herself and is beating Bernard at his own game!
Gabriella – from Italy. Warm, loving and sexy – like an Italian movie star come to life, she truly loves Bernard and has
her heart set firmly on marriage and a home.
Gretchen – from Germany. Outwardly insecure (or domineering!), she is ruled by her heart and ends up falling head over
heels for Robert from Wisconsin.
Women auditioning for the air hostesses should wear high heels and a fitted skirt to the auditions. Memorized
monologues will not be required for any of the roles at auditions. Emphasis will be placed on physical and vocal
presence, reacting, comic timing and physical comedy. Thank you!
AUDITIONS will be SUNDAY, DEC. 2 at 4-7pm and MONDAY, DEC. 3, 6-9pm. CALL BACKS (if any) will be
TUESDAY , DEC. 4, 6-8pm. Community Players Studio, 435 Josiah Bartlett Road, Concord Heights, Concord NH. Take
Exit 3 off Route 393, turn North on Rte. 106, take first Left onto Autumn Drive, turn Right onto Josiah Bartlett Rd. The
driveway to the Players Studio is immediately on your Left.
The production will be designed and directed by Jim Webber (of the whirling scenery in “The Philadelphia Story”) This
non-whirling set will be constructed by Rick Silverberg, with the many swinging, slamming doors provided by Steve
Lajoie. Joan Vick will be designing the costumes, with assistants Jeannie Landry and Carol Neveau. Kendra West-Senor
(our most recent Osy Strong Award recipient), E.J. Cohen and Joey Murphy will be creating the props and set dressings
(which “Bernard” has color-coded to go with each girlfriend!) Wally Pineault will be designing the lighting (and the
surprise “go-go” finale!) Charles Mitchell will assist with technical support. Supervising from the flight deck will be
stage manager Barbara Woodman and her assistant, Sally Kelly. “Boeing Boeing” will be co-produced by Allwynne Fine,
David Preece and Kevin Belval.

Players of the Past and Present
Allwynne Fine was born in England, the only daughter in a family of
six. When she was about nine and a half, she moved to New Hampshire
and lived with an aunt until the rest of her family came to the states
about eight months later and the family was reunited. She attended
Concord schools where during her senior year, Harriet Strong, a
member of the Community Players of Concord, directed the senior play
production of STAGE DOOR, and Allwynne worked backstage.
She then went to the University of New Hampshire to begin studies in
electrical engineering. She was carrying a heavy case load, playing
first chair viola in the UNH orchestra, and was dorm president. During
her second year, she developed mono and was told by her doctor to
drop out of school or change her major to lower her case load. She
moved out of the dorm into the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house and
changed her major to teaching while continuing to play in the UNH
orchestra and serving as a member of the Student Union. Following
graduation with a BA in English Education, Allwynne accepted a
teaching position in Lebanon. The school did not have a theater
department but a classroom interest in dramatics led to the formation of
a school drama club and Allwynne’s debut as a director.
Allwynne
After marriage, she moved back to Concord and joined the Junior
Service League, renewing her acquaintance with Harriet Strong and
acting in many productions under Harriet’s direction. When Harriet
stepped down, Allwynne took over directing the shows for the Junior
Service League. She also joined the Concord Community Orchestra
where she continued to play viola.
While continuing her live theater productions for the League,
Allwynne, an accomplished puppeteer, also directed a marionette
theater and presented workshops in the schools on puppet making and handling. She also volunteered in the schools as a
director of sixth grade plays. It was during this time that she asked Player member Ken Walker to help build sets for her
shows. Additionally, in 1974 she was advising director for TOY, Theatre of Youth, for Concord’s Department of Parks
and Recreation with Betty Abbott, another talented Player member.
While working with the JSL, she was approached by the Concord
Music Club to direct a production of Gilbert and Sullivan. She was
first introduced to the Players when three of her children were cast in
OLIVER in 1975 and thus began a long relationship with the Players.
She started helping with various shows working on costumes, lights,
and props. In 1982, she was asked to direct ANNIE GET YOUR
GUN for the Community Players.
Twenty years earlier, in 1962 Allwynne married Edward Fine and
they went on to have four children, 3 daughters and one son. ANNIE
GET YOUR GUN was the only production Ed ever went on stage for
as an extra in the ballroom scene.
Allwynne went on to direct some very successful main stage
musicals for the Players ; ANNIE-1983, THE MUSIC MAN II1985, APPLAUSE-1987, MY FAIR LADY-1989, BARNUM -1991,
SOUTH PACIFIC II-1996 and THE WIZARD OF OZ-1997. In
July of 1998 she also directed NOTHING SO IMPORTANT for the
Community Players at the Annicchiarico Theater as a fund raiser for
the studio.
In 1987 she was awarded the prestigious Osy Strong Award and Life
Membership with the Players. Allwynne has served the Community
Players not only as a director but also as Board President and
Treasurer, producer and stage manager. She has worked on props,
costumes and lighting, and served on many committees including
fundraising, play selection, program and publicity. She is also a
house manager and has provided hospitality for the City Auditorium.

After directing THE WIZARD OF OZ,
Allwynne took a break to enjoy her children
and grandchildren until 2011, when she returned
to active duty with the Players to co-produce
THE DROWSEY CHAPERONE and THE
PHILADELPHIA STORY.
Allwynne has served as president of the Junior
Service League, the Music Club, the Board for
Lady Visitors of the Ralph and Rumford Home,
and was on the Women’s Commission of the
Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. She was
treasurer and then president of the Friends of
the Audi, and is currently serving as secretary/
treasurer of the Board of Trustees for the Walker
Lecture Fund.
She retired in 2008 and remains active not only
with the Players but also with the Friends of the
City Auditorium. In her spare time she enjoys her
children, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren,
traveling, and her activities with the group
“Always an Adventure”.

Asked if she had a favorite she replied, “I loved them all.” She did, however, mention Wayland Bunnell’s first set with
her for ANNIE and that whole production; Steve Lajoie’s the red and white proscenium, Wayland Bunnell’s black and
white drop, and all the talent from BARNUM; and the wonderful and talented munchkins and cast from the WIZARD
OF OZ as being some of her favorite memories.
The Players are indeed fortunate that Allwynne is once again on our active list as she helps with all the productions this
year.
MOVED AND SECONDED
July 12 Board Meeting - It was announced that the Audi GALA Pitch-in will be held on Aug 20-22 and that the GALA
will be on Sept. 23 . The Annual Budget was accepted unanimously. It was voted to leave Mainstage prices at $17 for
adults and $19 for juniors and seniors and children, and for Children’s Theatre $8 for advanced tickets and $10 at the
door. It was also voted to keep the subscription tickets at $12 a ticket and $8 for Childrens’theatre tickets and to continue
the voucer program for mainstage shows.
July 19 Board Meeting - Uno’s will be a sponsor again this year. Kevin Belval announced that fire extinguishers have
been replaced, the AED has been set up and and that there were 13 people at annual cleanup. It voted to accept Bobby
Fonacier as Director and Choregrapher for THE PAJAMA GAME, Laura Lounsbury as Producer, and Judy Haywood
as Music Director. It was voted that the Season Selection Committee criteria be one general audience, and the other two
written within the past 10 years.
August 9 Board Meeting - The following were accepted as Committee Chairs: Erik Hodges. Friends of the City
Auditorium, Eric Halter, Website, Eric Halter; Hospitality, Nine Piroso; Shop Maintencance, Rick Silvergerg; Directors
Committee, Co-chairs Betty Lent and Wally Pinealt, and members Greg Stuart, Doug Schwarz, Paula Demers, Jim
Webber, Kendra West-Senor. It was voted to allow the Childrens Theatre to raffle off Fairy Houses and the money to go
the bottom off the current show budget.
August 13 Board Meeting - Kendra West-Senor, Props Chair presented a report from consultants she met with to assess
the Props room in the basement and asked the Board to consider taking care of the damp and moldy props room. This will
be discussed at the next Board Meeting. It was voted to appoint Allwynne Fine as NHCTA Rep. Wayland volunteered
to Chair the Season Selection Comm. Members are Joyce Webber, Matt McGonagle, Frank Budleman, Joey Murphy. An
Anti-Harrasment Policy was passed.

THRU THE STAGE DOOR
Esther Crowley received a message from Gene Lauze last July to let her know
he was in Japan with WEST SIDE STORY which was to close there around
August 15th. He is hoping to be in New Hampshire for a vacation following his
return to U.S.
Long-time member, Mary (Jinny) Dwelley died September 29 at Presidential
Oaks in Concord. Jinny joined the Players in May, 1967 and was very active
thru 1993. She Stage-managed, house managed, produced, and costumed many
shows. She served as a Board Member on various committees. Jinny received
Life Membership and the coveted Osy Strong Award. She will be missed by all
who knew her.
Bob Pearson had a heart attack recently and says he is doing very well.
RED RIVERTHEATRES’ FIFTH
BIRTHDAY
Red River Theatres, the Players season sponsor for several years,
celebrated “Cheers to Five Years”, a month-long celebration of
achievements for a milestone FIFTH birthday. The downtown Concord
independent cinema opened its doors on October 19, 2007. In 2008, in
conjunction with the film EVERY LITTLE STEP, the theatre featured a
collection of memorabilia from A CHORUS LINE from Players’ member
Lacy Long. In 2010, just prior to The Player’s production of BIG - THE
MUSICAL, Red River welcomed the NH Theatre Community for a “Film
to Play” program, comparing the movie BIG to the upcoming musical.
Red River Theatres is also an on-going member of the ARTS COMING
TOGETHER voucher program to promote membership and ticket sales to
Concord’s arts organizations.
Among the highlights of the month at RRT was an appearance by Players’
actor and member, Greg Stuart, performing a first-person zombie story
for the Zombie Event, DEAD IN THE HEAD, edited by Players member
Rick Broussard. (The two collaborated previously to create the life-sized
Dragon Smaug for CTP’s THE HOBBIT). Other noteworthy offerings
during the birthday month included the presentation for FREE of the John
Wayne classic, RED RIVER. There was also a screening of the impressive
35mm restoration of the French classic film, Jean Renoir’s LA GRANDE
ILLUSION as well as the silent classic NOSFERATU with live music
performed by Jeff Rapsis.
We thank you, Red River, for supporting our seasons. Having existed 85
years ourselves, we wish you similar longevity as a valued community arts
partner.

Season Search Committee
‘Tis the season to be jolly!
That is what we are about for our 86th Season: fun, laughter, and jollity. Our theme of “A Season of Laughter” is
destined to be a hit for the 2012 – 2013 Community Players offering to our community of theatre goers.
We hope you are all willing and eager to search and submit plays that will fulfill the agenda of fun, laugher and good
times. Your intrepid search committee needs titles, ideas, for plays that will send our audiences into paroxysms of giggles
and belly laughs. Two criteria to consider are general audience appeal and one written in the last 10 years.
All play titles and subjects will be thoroughly scrutinized by the committee and we’ll winnow down the list and present
the final selections at a membership meeting in January.
So, put on your comedy mask and your top hat and give these most experienced and learned (albeit crazed) theatre brains
some exercise. You’ll have a great time and be an asset to our season.
Road Show
Committee
September was a very busy month for
the Road Show Troupe.
On the 7th, we performed at the
Presidential Oaks Retirement
Community, by request of our dear
Jinny Dwelley. We sang Broadway
tunes to a packed room. Judging by
the number of audience members
who sang along with us, it was a walk
down memory lane.
The 29th found us at the Marriott
Courtyard, Grappone Conference
Center, where we presented a flashmob for the New England College
reunion. Between cast members
barging into the room in song, “staff”
breaking into song as water is being
poured and performers who were
disguised as graduates of the classes
of 1962-1967, and thus were seated at
tables around the room, the audience
was continually surprised.

The total number of data base
addresses now stands at 4624. We’ve
stayed in the mid-4000s for the past
several years. Thanks to the Friends
of the Audi who, three or four times a
year, do an address correction request
on their mailing which keeps our list
up to date. We split the cost of the
address corrections with the groups
that participate in any single mailing.

AN ADVENTURE
IN DIRECTING
WORKSHOP
This workshop date has been changed
from October 27 to December 8

Time 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
Where: The Studio
Instructor: Wally Pineault
This is a spin-off class from Wally’s
directing class in May, 2012. It is an
all day exercise in which we have
the opportunity to put everything we
know about directing together in a
fifteen-minute play or excerpt from
a play. Wally works one on one with
each aspiring director, and at the end
of the day each director and their
cast of actors will perform the play
for the members and friends. In this
session Wally would like you to select
a drama (no comedy, please). Look
for a play with some meat to it.There
is no need to provide him with a script
beforehand. When the performance is
finished, you may request feedback.

The adjudicators and representatives from AACT were extremely impressed with all the performances at the NHCTA
Festival. The shows chosen as best productions will continue on to the N. E. Regional Festival to be held at the
Chelmsford High School in February, 2013. The best production from the Regional Festival will continue on to the
National Festival to be held in Indiana, June 2013.
