A D VA N C E S I N C L I N I C A L S K I N C A R E Skin Lightening Actives What do skin lightening actives do? Skin-lighteners inhibit melanin tyrosinase or melanotropin and reduce or block some amount of melanin production. What types of skin lightening actives are there in Control Corrective products? Hydroquinone: A chemical available in some prescription and cosmetic forms for skin lightening. It acts by inhibiting melanin in your skin and is an ingredient that has been used for years in many preparations and is now being revisited due to its link to cancer. It usually does not have a ‘permanent’ effect and therefore needs to be used regularly to maintain the lightened skin effect. Kojic Acid: A by-product in the fermentation process of malting rice, for use in the manufacturing of sake, the Japanese rice wine. It is an inhibitor of the formation of melanin, in addition, it scavenges reactive oxygen species released excessively from cells or generated in tissue or blood. Licorice Root Extract: Distilled from the roots and stem of the plant, licorice extract is an antiinflammatory and de-pigmenting agent. Vitamin C: A water-soluble antioxidant powerhouse. It firms skin by boosting collagen production and brightens skin by fading dark spots and sun damage. Fruit Extracts FAQs Q: Can I use skin lightening actives on my clients with sensitive skin? A: Hydroquinone can cause irritation to the skin, especially for people that already have sensitive skin or allergies. Q: Can skin lightening actives make the skin overly sensitive to the sun? A: Yes, there is a greater sensitivity to sun and your client may be able to burn much faster. Q: How long until my client will see the results from using these skin lightening actives? A: Your clients will see results in about 30 days. Q: Is there any particular at home care instructions I should provide my client? A: You should always provide at home care instructions to all your clients. This is one of the most important jobs of esthetician. A proper skincare regimen should be followed based upon the client’s skin type. Sunscreen should be applied and re-applied during the day. Control Corrective products offer real results with skin lightening actives.
