Nimal Wirasekara
Presently I work as an independent consultant to several organizations and also is
the Vice President Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka Previously I held the
position of Executive Director - Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing for over a decade,
transforming from a loss making organization and achieved a growth of 40% year
on year making it the fastest growing professional body in Sri Lanka.
I am a Chartered Marketer, Diplomate and a full member of the Chartered Institute
of Marketing of the United Kingdom, an Honorary Member of the Institute of
Marketing Management South Africa, an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Sales
and Marketing Institute, and a Full Member (Ordinary Member) of the Sri Lanka
Institute of Marketing and a Member of the International Chamber of Commerce.
I have also successfully completed a course in Customer Relationship Management
(CRM) Systems at one of the leading Management Colleges in the world, Henley
Management College (incorporated by Royal Charter) of University of Reading) of
UK, under a scholarship provided by Asian Productivity Centre (Japan) and is a
member of the Henley management College Alumni, and the UK Alumni Association
of Sri Lanka.
Hold the position of a Board Member of the International Chamber of
Commerce Sri Lanka Chapter and a Centre Member of the Organization of
Professional Associations (OPA,) and was also a Director of the Tharuna Aruna
Institute – a World Bank funded programe under the ministry of Youth Affairs,
while being a member of the advisory committee on Marketing to the Export
Development Board. I led a team from SLIM to launch the Postgraduate Diploma in
Apparel Marketing (Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) in Sri Lanka. Effie Awards
was introduced to Sri Lanka by me and was the founder representative of Effies in
Sri Lanka.
I am a Past President of the Rotary Club of Colombo Millennium City. During my
tenure ad President the Club relocated and reconstructed a school destroyed by the
Tsunami with an investment of LKR 50,000,000. Out of over one hundred schools
damaged by the Tsunami, this was the first school to be completely reconstructed
in Sri Lanka, damaged by Tsunami The club under my Presidency built twenty
houses for the victims of Tsunami in the Hambantota district.
I have shared my knowledge and experience by lecturing for students following the
Chartered Institute of Marketing Examinations, Centre for Banking Studies of the
Central Bank, Sri Lanka Standards Institution, Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, etc.
University of Colombo, National Institute of Education, Golden Key Institute,
Industrial development Board, Export Development Board, and the Central Bank are
some of the organizations that have used my services as a resource person for
seminars, training programmes etc.
Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCISL,) and National Chamber
of Exporters (NCE) have used my expertise, in judging the Entrepreneur of the Year
Awards and the Exporter of the Year Awards. My last position was the Chaiman of
the Jury at the Entrepreneur of the Year Awards contest. I am also a judge at the
Business Plan Competition organized by “QTex Solutions”.
As a consultant and a Marketing/PR Specialist to the World Bank funded project to
obtain Private Sector Participation to the Water Supply and Drainage Board of the
Government of Sri Lanka I drew up the Public Relations Plan for the project. I have
been a moderator for professional examinations continuously for a number of years
and was also a member of the panel of consultants to the Janasaviya through the Sri
Lanka Institute of Marketing.
I was also a member of the panel of consultants to International Distilleries Lanka
for their expansion programme, and was a members of the panel of experts which
carried out the Corporate Plan for State Trading Corporation and had been doing
consultancy and other work for many other organizations.
