The Pedriza of Manzanares
The municipality of Manzanares El Real is located within the Regional Park of the Cuenca Alta
of the river Manzanares. The village is the access to the most attractive part of the Park: La
Pedriza.
At a distance of 50 km from Madrid, along the Colmenar Viejo highway, the area offers a unique
natural environment consisting of mountain range, river and lake.
La Pedriza is a fantastic composition of eroded and rounded rocks, complex hidden places of
contrasting colors and irregular forms.
From the village it is only possible to observe two of the three areas in which the famous
geologist Casiano de Prado divided La Pedriza. This classification was also adopted by
Bernaldo de Quirós and a hundred years on, it is still valid: El Alcornocal, La Pedriza Anterior
and La Pedriza Posterior, three clearly different rock formations.
