On Sunday, June 3, Mohonk Preserve hosted its first BioBlitz at the
Mohonk Preserve Foothills in New Paltz.
Last year, Mohonk Preserve partnered with the Open Space Institute to
manage the former Mohonk Mountain House foothills property, which
includes marshlands, grasslands and ridgelands, as well as the iconic
Testimonial Gateway, the stone edifice that once served as the entrance
to the hotel.
As part of the Preserve’s land management planning efforts, the
Conservation Science team has been compiling environmental and
cultural history information about the area, and the BioBlitz was
designed to add more data about the flora and fauna on the site.
The term “BioBlitz” was first used by U.S. National Park Service
naturalist Susan Rudy while assisting with the first BioBlitz held at
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, D.C. in 1996.

As Mohonk Preserve Research Committee member and biologist Joe Bridges, who helped organize the event,
noted, “A BioBlitz is an intensive survey of the plants and animals in a defined area during a specific time
period.”
Unlike traditional scientific field work, a BioBlitz generally includes both experts and members of the public.
The Preserve’s BioBlitz included about 20 scientists, along with local “citizen scientists,” who worked in six
groups focusing on birds, botany, aquatic life, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, and herptiles
(amphibians and reptiles).
The birding group, which convened at the Foothills at 5 a.m., and was led by Preserve Volunteer Lynn
Bowdery, identified over 45 species of birds, including the Purple Martin, which is rarely seen at the
Preserve, along with Bobolinks and Meadowlarks, all of which need large areas of grassland habitat. Due to
the decline of family farming, grasslands are the fastest declining habitat in the Northeast and the Mohonk
Preserve Foothills provides large areas of this threatened habitat.
The botany group, led by Joe Bridges, identified 200 species of plants, including the Barren Strawberry,
which had not been previously recorded on the Preserve.
The butterfly group, led by noted butterfly expert Henry Halama, counted 27 species of butterflies, including
only the fourth recorded sighting of the Giant Swallowtail on the Preserve.
The herptile group, led by biologist Roland Bahret, identified 8 species, including the Spotted Salamander
and Snapping Turtle, among other amphibians and reptiles.
The aquatic group, led by Preserve Director of Education Kathy Ambrosini, found 30 species and added a new
arachnid, the Six-spotted Fishing Spider, to the list of recorded pond life on the Preserve.
The dragonfly/damselfly group, led by Preserve Conservation Biologist Shanan Smiley, identified 9 species of
these insects throughout the day, before being interrupted by a thunderstorm.

Mohonk Preserve Director of Conservation Science John Thompson hopes to hold future BioBlitz events at
the Preserve as a way to both gather species data and promote community conservation.
“It’s a great way for people to get engaged and gain an understanding of why biodiversity and habitat
protection are important,” Thompson said.
In the meantime, research into the ecology of the Foothills goes on as Preserve Loewy Research Fellow Emily
Southgate investigates historical land use on the property, which will be used in conjunction with other
conservation science data to monitor and manage the diverse ecosystems of the Mohonk Preserve Foothills.
A beautiful evening and spectacular views greeted patrons
at Mohonk Preserve’s 15th annual auction. The event raised
nearly $200,000 to support land protection and

just for kids, goods and services for beauty and wellness,
works of art, adornments, activities and outings, and delicious food and drink.
Following the silent auction, lively auctioneer Judy Milne presided over the live auction, which kicked off with
a rousing performance of “We Will Rock You,” featuring special Mohonk Preserve lyrics. The power trio of
Judy, Preserve Director of Development Joe Alfano, and Associate Director of Volunteers & Special Events
Jamie Hritz belted out the Queen anthem, which concluded with a blistering guitar solo by Associate Director
of Information Technology Bill Sticker.
Featured live auction items including a ten-day expedition for two to the Galapagos Islands aboard the
National Geographic Endeavour, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions, a week in Cabo San Lucas, a day of
climbing with Preserve Board member and climbing legend Russ Clune, and a wide range of products and
services donated by local businesses and Preserve supporters, along with sponsorships for camps,
educational programming, and land preservation projects.
“The annual auction is a great event in a beautiful location, and supports causes that have a positive, lasting
impact across our region,” said Joe Alfano. “We’re particularly pleased that $56,000 was raised for the
Preserve’s summer camps and environmental education programs, and land stewardship projects.
The sold-out annual auction, which was sponsored by Ulster Savings Bank, drew more than 200 patrons. To
date, the event has raised $1.6 million in support of the Preserve’s mission and programs.

– Weather and Species.
This presentation introduces learners to a unique part of New York State
where weather records have been taken daily since 1896, and species
records collected since 1925. The longevity and methodological
consistency of these data sets show how temperature, precipitation, and
even the timing of the seasons have changed over time.

As the climate changes, species changes follow. Coupling the weather
data with dates of first plant blooms and spring arrival dates of birds illustrates how species are reacting to
these changes.
Climate Change at Mohonk provides New York State educators with a teaching tool which features local
evidence of global climate change. While most educational materials focus on declining polar bear
populations or melting ice caps, this presentation provides a rare local story based on long-term scientific
information.
In April, Preserve Conservation Biologist Shanan Smiley presented Climate Change at Mohonk as part of the
John Burroughs Lecture Series at SUNY Ulster. Shanan outlined some of the significant changes in weather,
flora, and fauna in the Shawangunks over the past decade. During this time period, the weather has grown
hotter and wetter, while plant growing times and animal arrival and departure dates have shifted based on
climate changes.
Through outreach programs in environmental education such as Climate Change at Mohonk, the Preserve is
able to reach beyond the ridge to help inspire the conservation change-makers of tomorrow.
