TRIGENICS vs. A.R.T TRIGENICS vs. A.R.T: What is the difference between these 2 manual therapies? TRIGENICS is a neuromuscular assessment, treatment, and training system which resets the way the brain communicates with the body to instantly decrease pain and increase strength and functional mobility. The main premise of treatment is based on “therapeutic neurosummation.” ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES (ART) is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves; problems often associated with repetitive strain. TRIGENICS MYONEUROLOGY These are the descriptions provided by each institution. But what does the practitioner need to know in order to distinguish the absolutely critical difference between these 2 treatments? The following article will compare the difference between these 2 essential treatment tools for the seasoned health care provider. ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES Trigenics is a neurologically based treatment system that treats imbalances in muscle tone and pull patterns between opposing and syngergistic muscle groups in the body. A.R.T is a myofascial treatment technique that treats scar tissue and overuse injuries by breaking down adhesions and restoring normal movement and oxygenation of the tissue. Trigenics treats the neuromuscular system by bombarding afferent pathways with enough stimuli to reset motor communication between the brain and muscle. A.R.T treats the local tissue and restarts the healing process by manually stripping muscles and breaking down scar tissue that has changed the function of that tissue. The effect of treatment is immediate restoration of strength and movement and an immediate decrease in pain. The effect of treatment is immediate restoration of movement and a decrease in pain as the tissue continues to heal. The long-‐term effect of treatment is lasting normalization of sensorimotor and biomechanical function The long-‐term effect of treatment is lasting biomechanical function of the local tissue. Trigenics treats both acute and chronic conditions and can facilitate the neurological firing of inhibited muscles and decrease the neurological firing of hypertonic muscles. A.R.T is typically used for chronic conditions and can restore the ‘glide’ between the muscle/tendon/ligament and the fascial system. Trigenics is an interactive treatment which involves patient-‐
generated resisted movement combined with mechanoreceptor distortion and focused breathing. Trigenics is a tri-‐modal treatment that affects the tonicity and neurology of the tissue. A.R.T is an active treatment where the practitioner manipulates the tissues of the patient while the patient or practitioner moves the target tissue. ART is a bi-‐modal treatment that locally affects the consistency and histology of the tissue.
