STATEMENT OF NEED
The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa. An
imported case from Liberia and associated locally acquired cases in healthcare workers have been
reported in the United States. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and
Response (ASPR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have established
the National Ebola Training and Education Center (NETEC) to increase the competency of
healthcare and public health workers and the capability of healthcare facilities to deliver safe,
efficient, and effective Ebola patient care
In cooperation with ASPR and the CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP),
NETEC is providing site visits, educational resources, and training to identified US medical
centers with prospective developed units capable of assessing, treating and managing Ebola virus
disease patients.
OVERVIEW
This conference will provide a summary on the many aspects of managing a facility responsible
for assessing and/or treating Ebola virus disease patients. This includes EVD clinical care and
patient management, staffing/infrastructure development, training in donning and doffing of
personal protective equipment, considerations for pediatric and OBGYN patient populations,
laboratory protocols, waste management and occupational health management of clinical staff.
State and jurisdictional public health planning and preparedness topics will also be covered.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, participants will be better equipped to:
-Describe the knowledge, technology, equipment and controls needed to prepare hospitals to
receive and care for patients with suspected or known Ebola Virus Disease
- Discuss organizational and administrative policies that must be developed and implemented by
Ebola assessment and treatment hospitals in order to increase capability to receive and care for a
patient suspected with Ebola Virus Disease
- Describe patient care protocols that have been successfully utilized for the care of patients with
Ebola Virus Disease
- Demonstrate appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) selection and donning/ doffing
based upon the condition of the patient
- Discuss environmental infection control protocols for handling waste and infectious fluids from
a patient with suspected or confirmed Ebola Virus Disease.
-Describe an effective healthcare worker monitoring plan
-Discuss state and regional preparedness plans for patients suspected with Ebola or another
seriously communicable disease
