Geometry * Wheel of Theodorus * Extra Credit Project DUE: NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2014 Name: _______________________ Period: ___________ The grade received on this project can be used to replace your lowest quiz or test grade this marking period. Please read the rubric below carefully before beginning your project. This Project is an opportunity to be creative and use the mathematical ideas you have learned from the unit covering the Pythagorean Theorem. You will make a Wheel of Theodorus, answer some questions and complete the formulas. Directions: 1. Make your wheel: Start by marking a central point on your paper that all triangles will rotate around and draw a right triangle with both legs being 1 inch in length. Use your index card to help make right angles. Draw the hypotenuse. Now use the hypotenuse of this triangle as the leg of the next triangle and make the second leg 1 inch in length. Again, make sure to use a ruler and note card for accuracy. Draw in the hypotenuse. Continue this process until all 17 triangles have been created. 2. Make sure your wheel has all angles and sides marked. 3. Outline your wheel and turn it into a picture. Be creative! Be colorful, and use your imagination. 4. Complete the calculation chart (back of this handout). 5. Answer the questions (back of this handout). 6. Turn it in on time WITH THIS paper!! (the project will not be accepted late OR without this paper) Note: The “Creative Style” points available for this project will be based on how creative you are when decorating your wheel. Listed below are some suggested theme ideas you can choose from or come up with your own original idea. Movie or TV Theme Food Theme Use of Multiple Wheels Creative Color Scheme Nature Theme Game Theme Sports Theme Creative Pattern Historical Theme Music Theme Rubric: Requirements Points earned Construction and Wheel contains a minimum of 17 triangles. _________ labeling of wheel Triangles all meet at the center point of spiral. _________ Triangles are constructed properly (no gaps or overlays). _________ 5 points each All right angles and legs are marked correctly. _________ 25 total Each hypotenuse is marked correctly in radical form. _________ Creativity Neat presentation. _________ Design is original. _________ 3 points each Theme is clear. _________ 15 points total Color is used effectively. _________ Design is decorated with attention to detail. _________ Calculation Chart Pythagorean Theorem is written at the top of the chart. _________ All entries are completed for the first 17 triangles. _________ 10 points each Measure for the hypotenuse is show in radical form. _________ 40 points total Measure for the hypotenuse is shown in decimal form. _________ Project questions Each question is answered accurately in a full sentence Q1_________ with proper grammar and spelling.
