Biopearls
AquaGenie™ BioPearls® are made of high performance porous sintered glass and have
been designed for complete biological filtration of fish-waste in aquariums combined
with optimum volume mobilisation plus by-pass and clog-free mechanical filter usage.
AquaGenie BioPearls will neutralize ammonia and nitrites by aerobic nitrification, keep
nitrates low by anaerobic de-nitrification and avoid phosphates build-up by the repetitive
evacuations of the organic debris from Aqua Genie filters. BioPearls are inert, non toxic
& pH neutral; also not edible and not to be swallowed.
Only AquaGenie filters using BioPearls as filter media are able to keep all 4 noxious
aquarium nutrients levels at zero or close to zero and this will practically eliminate any
chance of filamentous or benthic algal proliferation!
Here some extracts of claims made by 4 leading brands about their own filter media similar to
the high performance porous BioPearls! SEACHEM™ MATRIX™ Biofilter Media
A highly porous media designed to provide exceptionally efficient bio-filtration for single site
removal of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate from freshwater, marine, and reef aquaria. Matrix is a
porous inorganic solid about 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of matrix provides as much surface
(<162 m) as 40 liters of plastic balls. Matrix provides internal macroporous surface area. These
macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows
Matrix , unlike other forms of bio-media, to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite,
simultaneously in the same filter.

EHEIM SUBSTRAT PRO
Bio filter medium with high biological performance. Substrat Pro is a highly porous filter medium
consisting of sintered glass. Its surface structure offers excellent colonization conditions to the
important purification bacteria. pH Neutral, 4x faster rate of decomposition of toxins, bacteria
stick better to surface with complex pore system, 450sqm/lt optimal sites for bacteria
colonization, washable and reusable, prolonged usage up to 50% more. Substrat Pro offers
perfect colonization conditions to the important purification bacteria through the high bulk
density of the spherical shape (full utilization of the volume) and the perfect surface structure
(maximum number of bacteria on each sphere)

SERA SIPORAX is a fully biological filter material for all internal, external and trickle filter
systems, and for garden pond filters. Therefore 1 liter Sera Siporax ensures more than 200
liters of biologically clean aquarium water. Sera Siporax is an excellent choice for small filters.
Sera Siporax provides anaerobic bacteria an extremely large amount of open-pored tunnel
structures. This allows an ideal supply of the anaerobic bacteria with nutrients and a smallest
amount of fresh water. There are oxygen-poor conditions within the tunnels. This makes the

bacteria crack nitrate to get enough oxygen. Consequently, they continuously break down the
nitrates, and the aquarium water remains low in nitrate. The surface of one liter of Sera Siporax
has almost as much biological breakdown power as 34 liters of ceramic filter material.

SIPORAX® Mini: =265 m² /lt
A high-performance, fine-pore bio-filter media with unbelievably high surface area and the ability
to perform both nitrification and de-nitrification under certain conditions. Media is 7/16"(10mm)
in size.

KENT MARINE nitrate sponge is a granular Zeolitic medium which works by two methods. 1) it
slowly directly adsorbs small amounts of ammonia that are released by fish and natural
processes, 2) it fosters anaerobic bacterial de-nitrification due to its physical porous structure.
This de-nitrification slowly reduces nitrate levels in the aquarium. It works well in freshwater
tanks or tap water to remove toxic ammonia directly! Nitrate sponge prolongs the time allowed
between water changes by keeping nitrates low!

The above claims are made despite that none of these products have been associated
with any kind of quick evacuation of aquarium waste.
Only Biopearls used as filter media in AquaGenie filters are able to facilitate the fast
removal of aquarium debris by instant reverse flush.
