HARPETH HILLS LADIES GOLF ASSOCIATION WOMEN HEALTH EMPOWERMENT ™ The ladies of HHLGA are so honored to have sponsored, since 2012, a tournament for VanderbiltIngram Cancer Research. Here are some of the reasons we support them. Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center is home to three Special Programs in Research Excellence (SPOREs) as designated by the National Cancer Institute. It is one of only 10 in the country. The SPORE in Breast Cancer is made up of investigators specializing in patient care, basic science, and "translational" research, or research that moves quickly from basic science in the lab to concrete treatments, methods of prevention, and detection. The objectives of the Breast SPORE include: The discovery of mechanisms of anti-estrogen resistance The determination of pathogenic mechanisms and new therapies for triple negative breast cancer he identification of genetic markers of breast cancer risk in women with pre-neoplastic mammary lesions The investigation of mechanisms and biomarkers of bone quality in patients with metastatic breast cancer The VICC Breast Cancer SPORE is led by Dr. Carlos Arteaga and Dr. Jennifer Pietenpol, who also serves as director of the cancer center. Significant strides have been made in the identification of specific gene mutations that serve as the cause of breast cancer. New therapies are being simultaneously developed to combat these mutations making treatment far more effective and cheaper than the traditional use of radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery.
