PruCare
There every step of the way
At PruHealth we know how difficult it is for
someone when they are diagnosed with a
complex and life threatening condition.
That’s why we have our dedicated PruCare team to support members
and their families through what can be a difficult and stressful time.
We’ll also make sure they have access to the best possible medical care
and treatment.

There every
step of the way
Medical professionals and dedicated
case managers
PruCare is a crucial team for our members offering a dedicated, doctor led service. The
team is made up of medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and technical claims
associates.
Members who need treatment for cancer, psychiatry or any other complex and high
cost treatment will be given a personal point of contact in the PruCare team, their own
dedicated case manager.
Their case manager will understand the member’s situation, providing support for them
and their family at what can be a difficult time.

Focus on
getting better
Helping members get the best from
their plan
The PruCare team are here to make the treatment process as straightforward as possible.
Whether it’s facilitating access to a faster diagnosis, providing information on treatment at
home (where possible) or our NHS Cash Benefit options, they help members get the best
from their plan, helping to provide peace of mind.

40% of workplace sickness
absence is attributed to
mental health conditions.*
Caring for the mind and body
It’s not only the physical health of our members we look after, but their mental
wellbeing too. We pay for consultations and treatment with a psychiatrist or psychologist.
If our members need a stay in hospital, we pay for that as well.
Psychiatric cover is optional, so not all members will have this cover.

More than 1 in 3 people in
the UK will develop cancer
in their lifetime.*
Cancer drugs can be very expensive.
In 2011 the average of our top ten cancer
claims was over £120,000.
Based on an average premium of
£720, that’s 167 years of premium.
Peace of mind with Full Cancer Cover
If our members are diagnosed with cancer, our Full Cancer Cover provides just that.
It covers in-patient and out-patient costs in full, including:
• Radiotherapy, chemotherapy and follow-up consultations
• Biological therapies
• Hormone and bisphosphonate therapies
• Cancer surgery and reconstructive surgery
• Stem cell transplantation.
If the cancer is no longer treatable, we pay for our members to have care that can relieve
their symptoms. This includes pain relief at the end stage of cancer. Our members have
peace of mind they will receive the best possible medical care available.
Customers can choose to downgrade their cancer cover for a small reduction in premium. This limits cover for
biological, hormone and bisphosphonate therapies.

The average cost per patient for a
course of the following drugs used for
the treatment of cancer in 2011 were:
Avastin
used to treat colorectal and
lung cancer – £70,000
Herceptin
used to treat breast cancer – £60,000
Sutent
used to treat kidney cancer and cancer
of the digestive system – £40,000
Access to the latest drugs
and treatments
New drugs and treatments are being developed all the time. But they’re
not always covered by the NHS.
If a member’s consultant suggests a new drug or treatment, and our
clinical team can see that it’s helping other patients, we’ll cover it even if
the NHS won’t.
PruCare | PruHealth
£7.5 million
In 2011 through the work we do with hospitals,
consultants and providers we saved £7.5m.
That would fund a course of
Avastin, used to treat colorectal
and lung cancer, for over 105 members
or
Herceptin, used to treat
breast cancer, for 125 members
or
Sutent – used to treat kidney cancer and cancer
of the digestive system, for over 185 members.
Always managing costs, but never
compromising care
We regularly assess our relationships with care providers in our network and
clinical treatments offered, to provide our members with access to the best possible
medical care.
We always manage our costs ensuring best value for money, but never compromise the
quality of care our members receive.
