RFA Minimal Invasive Surgery
g y?
Alternating current through the tissue creates coagulation necrosis of benign and
malignant tumors with Ultrasonograph or Endoscope guiding, not ventrotomy.
CoATherm is used to ablate the border tissue for preventing metastasis after
resection of Cancer.
CoATherm is based on the frictional heat principle that 480kHz currents make
polarity change 480 thousands times from negative pole to positive one or from
negative pole to positive one through active tip, not bring about thermal energy
from of needle.

1. Thyroid/Breast Benign Nodule Ablation
Histopathologic change of thyroid nodule after RF ablation.
A. On sonogram obtained before RF ablation, a large complex mass (solid 70%) is seen in right
lobe of thyroid gland (si
(size:
e: 2×3
2×3.2×4.2
2×4 2 cm
cm, volume:14.07
volume:14 07 ml)
ml). This mass is proven benign by
fine needle aspiration biopsy.
B. On sonogram obtained during procedure, the electrode is positioned within nodule and round
hyperechogenicity from active tip is appeared.
C On sonogram obtained 4 months after RF ablation
C.
ablation, the volume of nodule was decreased by 71%

2. Liver/Lung/Kidney Cancer Ablation
1) Under Ultrasonograph
Ultrasound for guidance and monitoring during the procedure.
A. Pre
Pre- treatment sonogram shows a hypoechoic metas tasis from breast cancer in the
right lobe of the liver.
B. The echogenicity of the tumor is increased by microbubbles immediately after ablation.

3. Myoma Mass
1) Under Ultrasonograph
The change of myoma mass after RF ablation.
A On sonogram obtained before RF ablation, the size of mass was 6 cm

cm.
B. On sonogram obtained 8 months after RF ablation, the size of volume was 2.4 cm
Radiofrequency Ablation induces irreversible cell death and relieves clinical symptoms of myoma.
By coagulation of vessels, decreased blood supply to the mass contribute to downsize the mass as
well. Postoperative adhesion and myometrium must be monitored carefully. Postoperative adhesion
is mainly due to multiple punctures and serosal damage. Along with adhesion, the probability of
uterine rupture during pregnancy after myolysis must be assessed.
Radiofrequency myolysis is to be a effective and minimal invasive treatment modality that preserves
uterus.

2) Under Laparoscopy
Uterine Adenomyosis by RF Ablation
under laparoscopy
- To destroy the adenomyoma cell
- To block the feeding vessel
- To keep the Uterus

4. Pancreas/Gallbladder Mass through EUS under CT guided
CT guided RF thermal ablation in the pancreas and endobiliary RFA treatment is feasible and safe. Induced
thermal lesion size can best be monitored.
RF ablation can offer an alternative treatment option for pancreatic cancer and inresectable malignant bile

obstruction.
In some patient (with cancer of the body of the pancreas) who was receiving morphine because of
intolerable pain, significant pain relief has been observed.
