NANCY POSTERO
Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology
Nancy Postero is an Associate Professor in the Anthropology department at UC San Diego. Formerly a human rights
lawyer and a radio journalist, she received her PhD from UC Berkeley in 2001. Her work focuses on the intersection
of race, politics, and political economy. She has carried out fieldwork with the Guaraní people of lowland Bolivia
since1994. Along with numerous articles on indigenous politics in Bolivia, she is the author of Now We Are Citizens:
Indigenous Politics in Post-multicultural Bolivia (Stanford 2007). She has edited several collections and special
journal issues including: The Struggle for Indigenous Rights in Latin America (Sussex 2003 with Leon Zamosc); Living
in Actually Existing Democracies (Latin American Research Review 2010 with Phil Oxhorn); Neoliberalism,
Interrupted, Social Change and Contested Governance in Contemporary Latin America (Stanford 2013 with Mark
Goodale); The Politics of Indigeneity in Bolivia, Past and Present (Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies
2013); and Performance Politics: Spectacular Productions of Culture in Contemporary Latin America, (Identities:
Global Studies in Culture and Power 2014 with Nicole Fabricant). Her new book, The Indigenous State: Race,
Politics, and Performance in Plurinational Bolivia, is under contract with UC Press.
She came to UCSD in 2001 as Assistant Professor and was advanced to Associate in 2007. She teaches in
Anthropology, International Studies, and Human Rights. She is the Director of the Human Rights Program. She has
served on Graduate Council, and on Advisory committees for CILAS (Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies),
ISP (International Studies Program), Eleanor Roosevelt College, and IICAS (Institute for International and
Comparative Area Studies). She served on the Dean of Social Science’s Diversity Committee and the Task Force for
the Future. She was a co-founder of the Human Rights Minor, and served on the Studio for Ethnographic Design
Board. At the department level, she has served as Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Undergraduate Studies,
Faculty Diversity Coordinator, member of Graduate Awards Committee, and chair/member of various search
committees. She serves on the Editorial Board of LACES, the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic
Studies.
She has received teaching awards from ERC (2006), Marshall (2007), Latin American Studies (2009,2014), and UCSD
Panhellenic Conference (2014). She has received outside funding from UC MEXUS, UC Humanities Research
Institute, Hellman Foundation, UC Center for New Racial Studies, and two grants from Anthropology’s Wenner
Gren Foundation. She was a visiting scholar at the Interdisciplinary Center for Intercultural and Indigenous Studies
(ICIIS) at the Catholic University of Chile in 2014-2015.
