Composition
Each tablet contains:
Sennosides 7.5 mg
Properties
Natural Laxative
Senna is an anthraquinone laxative which is used to treat constipation & for bowel evacuation
before radiological procedures. The active, anthraquinone is liberated into the colon from the
glycosides by colonic bacteria & the effect usually occurs 6:12 hours after administration.
Metabolism & Excretion
Sennosides are extensively metabolized within the gut lumen.
Excretion is almost entirely, as metabolites in feces. Unchanged fecal excretion is slight (< 5%).
Indications
1- For relief of functional constipation (chronic or occasional) & may aid in rehabilitation of the
constipated patient by facilitating regular elimination.
2- It can also be used in those cases where the aim is to avoid the effort involved in the evacuation
of the bowel or whenever rectal lesions are present (hemorrhoids and anal fissures) where the
constipation may be due to the effort itself when trying to evacuate the bowel.
3- As laxative prior to gut investigation.
4- Constipation in elderly, pregnancy and puerperium and slow transit constipation.
5- As adjunct to anthelmintic therapy.
Drug Interactions
No major drug interactions have been described.
Use in pregnancy
Sennosides are widely used in pregnancy as self medication.

no effects on the infants.

Prolonged use or over dosage can result in diarrhoea with excessive loss of water & electrolytes,
particularly, potassium. There is also the possibility of developing an atonics non-functioning
colon.
Discoloration of the urine may occur with anthraquinone derivatives & may interfere with
diagnostic tests.
Precautions & Warnings
Senna should not be given to patients with intestinal obstruction or with undiagnosed abdominal
symptoms, care should also be taken in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Prolonged use
should be avoided.
