Tarentula hispanica is a known drug in Homoeopathy but it has not been used extensively. Its
use has been reported in homoeopathic literature for various clinical conditions like depression,
headache, hiccough, quinsy, cystitis, vertigo, otorrhoea, pyrosis, constipation, seminal
emission, neuralgia of legs, cough, dyspnoea and fever. Most of these symptoms have been
reconfirmed in the study conducted by Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH).
Besides these, in conditions like conjunctivitis, dyspepsia, flatulence, loose stool, pain in
deltoid region, pain in shoulder joints and in pimple-like eruptions it is also found useful. A total
of 2794 patients were studied in this multicentric clinical verification trial under CCRH to confirm
the symptoms of Tarentula hispanica, as mentioned in the homoeopathic materia medica.

INTRODUCTION
royal residence of Pardo, Spain, in the month of
3
July, during which time the poison is stronger . The
medicine was prepared from the live spider, all its
parts triturated in sugar of milk to complete dryness
1
and from this the alcoholic dilution was prepared .
Tarentula covers a number of poisonous spiders, but
in homoeopathy, unless otherwise distinguished, it
refers to Tarentula hispanica. Nunez is the chief
authority of this drug. He conducted the proving and
collected much outside information bearing on the
action of the poison. Provings conducted by Monge,
del Rio, Tejero, Fejedor, Cuesta, Dubost, Perry,
Ros, Ituttalde, Gonzales and Chategnier, were
reported by Nunez, translated by Terry and were
1
published in American Journal of Homeopathy.
“Tarantella” is a dance named from the city of
Tarento in Southern Italy. “Tarantism” is a dancing
mania, set up in persons bitten by the Tarentula
spider, or in those who imagine themselves bitten.
2
The cure is through music and dancing.
Clarke has illustrated some cases where it has been
mentioned that the toxicological symptoms developed
after the bite of Tarentula were completely recovered
by hearing music and it also can alleviate the periodical
recurrence of complaints.2
Many stalwarts in Homoeopathy like C.M. Boger,
Hering, Farrington, Kent and P. C. Majumdar have
mentioned their experiences with Tarentula for
different
clinical
conditions.
These
include
suffocative feeling, constant jerking of limbs, rolling
of head in night gowns, tonsillitis and cystitis. Its
prominent sensations are tickling, burning, scorching
and numbness and it is suited to nervous, hysterical
2
patients subject to choreic affections and tickling . It
is also suited to the persons of foxy, mischievous
4
nature with destructive tendency .
The male and female Tarentula used in the provings
were collected by Dr. Mariano de la Paz Graells, at the

depression, choreic phenomena of a marked
character, being more severe and terrible in their
manifestations than are those produced by any other
poison. It is said that the patients will cause their
bodies to move to the measure of the music and are
often led to execute a kind of a dance. The chief
characteristic is that the paroxysms are quieted,
sometimes entirely removed, through the influence
of music, a cure sometimes resulting there from. The
attacks are often accompanied by great sexual
6
excitement .
Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy
reproved the drug Tarentula hispanica between
1985-1987 and more than 40 symptoms were found
to have reappeared when compared with original
7
proving . This demonstrated the validity of earlier
provings. Many new symptoms were also proved in
this proving and which required clinical verification
for their professional use.
Tarentula hispanica
P. C. Majumdar reports a case of a girl of 18 years,
diagnosed as hystero-epilepsy and Ignatia 30 as a first
prescription did nothing to the patient but Tarentula in
high potency brought her out of the fit and restored her
completely in a few minutes. C. M. Boger cured a male
patient complaining of irritative cough with soreness all
over the body and with dryness of throat, cough
aggravation by lying down, at night and in morning after
rising and amelioration from smoking. There was
tearing pain in chest with shortness of breath for at
least an hour after each attack of cough. Three doses
of Tarentula cured the case.2
Materials and Methods
Participants for the study were drawn from the OPDs of
the respective Institutes / Units of the Council. Patients
who presented with the indications of the drug were
enrolled in the study. Details of the presenting
symptoms and signs were recorded in the predefined
case recording proforma and the patient was
prescribed Tarentula hispanica (if indicated) in 6c
potency. If there was no change in symptoms and signs
for a significant period, next higher potencies like 30c
and 200c were prescribed and in case no change was
observed, even after change of potencies, the case
was dropped from the study and those cases were
treated in the O.P.D. of the concerned Institute/ Unit
with other indicated medicine(s).
It has been reported in literature that Tarentula
hispanica is capable of relieving a number of clinical
conditions when indicated homoeopathically and
these include Angina pectoris, Callosities, Chorea,
Coccygodynia, Corneal opacity, Cystitis, Depression
of spirits, Insanity, Dysmenorrhoea, Epistaxis,
Fibroma, Headache, Hiccough, Hysteria, Intermittent
fever, Kleptomania, Nymphomania, Levitation,
Locomotor ataxia, Mania, Migraine, Pruritus
pudenda, Gonorrhoea, Weakness in sphincter ani,
Quinsy, Diphtheria, Septic diseases, Spinal irritation,
Spinal sclerosis, Tumours, Cancer, neuralgia of
1,2,4, 5
Uterus, & Tumours of vertebrae.
In this multicentric trial of Tarentula hispanica, 2794
patients (1348 males and 1446 females) were
prescribed trial drug during the period. The medicine
was procured from the licensed pharmacy in various
potencies viz. 6c, 30c and 200c. Caution has been
given not to prescribe this medicine below 3x potency.3
The scientific name of this spider is Tarentula

hispanica and its natural order is Araneideae .
Study settings
The study was carried out at Regional Research
Institute (H), New Delhi, Homoeopathic Drug
Research Institute, Lucknow (U.P.), Homoeopathic
Research Institute, Jaipur (Rajasthan), Clinical
Research Unit, Jammu (J & K), Clinical Verification
Unit, Ghaziabad (U.P.), Clinical Verification Unit,

It is distributed over South America and South of
Europe especially Spain 3. This spider venom contains
an active principle known as Arachnolysin3 which is
haemolytic. The action of this poison differs only from
other spider poisons in that it is more persistent. The
cerebro-spinal system being the seat of its primary
effects, through which it causes, together with
restlessness, and great mental and physical

(character, modalities, concomitants etc.) have also
been found to be relieved in patients which are not
mentioned in the literature and have been kept along
with the main symptom in italics. In the column
'Improvement observed' the first figure denotes the
number of patients who had the symptom and to
whom the medicine was prescribed and the second
figure denotes the number of patients who got relief
of the same symptom; this is followed by the
percentage of improvement given in parenthesis.
The data of all the cases were collected, compiled and
analyzed. The clinically verified symptoms are given in
Table-1 along with the number of patients prescribed
on the basis of symptoms available in literature and
also the number of patients who got relieved after
application of medicine. Numericals super scribed
along with the symptoms denote the literature cited.

During the study, a group of symptoms were also found
to be relieved which are new and not found in the
referred literature, although they may be present in
other text books of Materia Medica. These are the
additional symptoms of the medicine that were relieved
either fully or partially. These, therefore, emerged as
clinical symptoms of Tarentula hispanica.

by Hering , Clarke & Allen in their Materia Medica.
Tarentula hispanica was prescribed to 49 patients
suffering from vertigo and 35 were improved after
treatment. Out of these participants, 27 who were
having the sensation of falling down were improved
after taking the medicine.
It is also found to be a very useful medicine to treat
headache as mentioned in Homoeopathic Materia
Medica but the modality verified in this trial was 'worse
from sun and better by pressure' in 23 of such patients
and they were relieved after taking medicine. In
conjunctivitis its application was also found helpful to
the participants with itching of eyes and lachrymation.
Similarly in otorrhoea, the character of discharge
was verified as thin, sticky and offensive. In coryza,
Tarentula is found useful in thin, watery discharge,
aggravation in closed room and better in open air.
Dyspepsia (heart burn, sour eructation) and
hiccough have also improved clinically by using
Tarentula in a good number of patients(Table 1).
Its action on gastro-intestinal tract is further verified
through clinical improvement in bloating of abdomen
and constipation especially in cases of hard, scanty
and insufficient stool.
Its urinary symptoms are marked with frequent scanty
urination at night and is verified in lines with symptoms
mentioned in the Materia Medica of Hering and Allen's
Encyclopaedia. Pricking pain in hand agg. from motion,
noise and amel. by rubbing emerged as a new
symptom which was an associated symptom in 64
