Pedestrian Countdown at Traffic Signals
siemens.co.uk/traffic
PCaTS display units are used on ‘far sided’ pedestrian
signal crossings to indicate the remaining duration of
the pedestrian blackout period. They are particularly
beneficial when the blackout period is long and give
pedestrians an exact indication of the number of
seconds remaining before the pedestrian red man
will appear, allowing them to clear the crossing
safely, before vehicles start to encroach on the
crossing space.
Fully compatible with LV and ELV sites
The Siemens PCaTS unit is fully compatible with LV (230V)
and ELV (48V) systems. For ELV systems both the
Advanced Siemens ‘DC’ and basic AC lamp drive voltage
types are accommodated.
The units are separately powered and are able to
accommodate both 24V (AC/DC) and 48V (DC) supply
systems without the need for special configuration or link
connections. The support for 24V supplies in particular
allows the units to be powered using existing detector
power supply cabling if this is present at the pole top.
Excellent visual appearance
The Siemens PCaTS units feature highly visible ‘double
stroke’ LED digits which ensure maximum visibility for
pedestrians using the crossing.
The outstanding visual appearance is enhanced by the use
of a flat lens which is ‘black masked’ to minimise sun
phantom reflections. Although typically not required the
unit may be fitted with a small hood to further enhance
the sun phantom performance if required.
Plug and Play installation
Once installed the Siemens PCaTS units he unit does not
require any configuration as it automatically detects the
blackout period after two learning cycles of the signals.
Timing synchronisation with the blackout period is
achieved by the use of direct connections to the red and
green signal feeds via totally isolated input circuits, which
are designed to ensure they have no impact on controller
lamp or safety monitoring. These inputs are also used to
sense the dim/bright state of the signals and the PCaTS
unit will automatically dim when the associated
pedestrian signals dim.
Easily able to be retrofitted
The Siemens PCaTS units are completely ‘look and feel’
compatible with Siemens Helios Traffic signals and are
easily able to be installed, either as part of a new
installation or as a retrofit to an existing site. The units are
also able to be easily retrofitted to sites which use the
Peek Elite traffic signal range.

Inbuilt fault monitoring
Physical Size and weight (TBC)
The Siemens PCaTS design delivers a particularly robust
solution but significant monitoring is also performed
within the unit. If a problem is detected the unit will
automatically extinguish and provide an indication of the
fault, via visual LEDs on the front of the unit and also via
an isolated fault output, which may be connected back to
the host traffic signal controller and monitored by any
associated fault monitoring equipment if required.
