Welcome!
Welcome to 2015! Does it ever change for the farmer,
the avid gardener or the novice? Looking over the
Hart’s Seed catalogs from the early 1900’s, the same
concerns were expressed then as today.
We try to keep up to date on the latest trends and
varieties that show the best promise for a successful
harvest. Sometimes it’s a new introduction and
sometimes it’s an old stand-by that our grandparents
grew.
Three trends are getting a lot of press this year (not
including the weather):
Know Your Farmer. As people become more
concerned about the food they eat, they realize it’s
more important to buy local for so many reasons.
White Eggplant and Baby Bell Peppers have been
real eye-catchers at Local Farmer’s Markets.
Pollinators. Bees have been on the decline, and
more gardeners are planting flowers to attract and
nurture them. We’ve added two varieties especially
for the bees; Fiddlehead Flower and Yellow Tithonia.
Grow BABY Grow! One of the big ‘trend setters’ is
the production of micro-greens for farm markets and
restaurants. ‘Veggie Confetti’ Sweet & Savory Mix
was developed right here in Wethersfield after weeks
of taste tests. There is also a full list of individual
varieties suitable for micro-green production.
The Hart Family continues to be here for you, their
customers, with the quality and service you’ve come
to expect for 123 years! We raise a glass to honor
those who make their living providing us with food for
our body and soul.
GE Free
What is GE FREE?
We continue to receive letters, emails and calls
asking if we sell GMO (Genetically Modified
Organism) seed. What is really being asked
is do we sell seed that has been created using
Genetic Engineering. This GE FREE logo is our
promise to you, our customers:
We do not distribute ANY seed that has been
produced through genetic engineering.
Period.
We have designed and adopted this new
logo that you will see printed on our headers,
literature and packets to remind customers of
our continued promise. From our family to yours
since 1892. For more information on GMO and
GE, please visit our website www.hartseed.com
a HERITAGE VARIETIES b
As you go through our catalog, you will notice the a symbol next to some items. In generations past,
vegetables, herbs and flowers were selected and
grown from year to year for their exceptional taste,
fragrance and usefulness. Many varieties would have
been lost if not for the dedicated family gardeners
who recognized these heirlooms as our inheritance.
We have taken this opportunity to reintroduce the
gardeners of today to the best of the heirloom varieties
from our own family’s experience and heritage.
Throughout this catalog you will see old drawings of
a number of different varieties that we’ve sold over
the years. Many of these drawings are from our
1901 and 1914 catalogs, the oldest surviving catalogs
in our possession. In 1943, we lost our circa 1858
homestead warehouse to fire. Through the generosity
of others this wonderful historical material remains in
our archives.

Micro-Greens & Mini-Greens
Are these tiny plants the new ‘foodie’ rage for gardeners, chefs and nutritionists? It may be a new idea to some,
but eating tiny greens as a flavorful garnish or crunchy topping has been around for years. These are not sprouts
– they are seedlings (stem, cotyledons, and first true-leaves; no root or seed coat) of edible vegetables, herbs
and flowers. Easy to grow in just a few days from seed, the leaves can have 4-6 times the nutritional value of
the same mature vegetable.
Veggie Confetti – Sweet & Savory Mix
Item Code: SMICSWES
This mix was developed right here at Hart’s Seed.
We grew 18 different varieties of greens and
evaluated them for days to maturity, appearance
and most of all, taste (quite a few didn’t make that
cut). This combination of varieties mature to have 2
cuttings if you harvest at the seed-leaf stage or one
cutting if you allow the plants to mature to the first
true-leaf stage. Lettuces and spinach for that sweet
crunch. Radish, kale, chard, beet, and arugula for a
mild bite. Basil and summer savory for savory flavor
with just a touch of citrus from the gem marigolds.
