S &A Pearson
FAMILY: Sterculiaceae
HABIT: A tall upright tree to 45m with greybrown longitudinally fissured or wrinkled
trunk, buttressed at the base.
LEAVES: Alternate, trifoliate, long stalked
leaves are dark green above and bronze
beneath. The elliptic leaflets, about 7-12cm
long, have conspicuous lateral veins.
FLOWER/FRUITS: Terminal clusters of
small creamish, bell-shaped flowers are
followed by bunches of dry brown, one
seeded, long winged fruits during December
and January.
PROPAGATION: Remove ‘wings’ and sow
seed within 7 days. The fruit is sown with
the winged side standing vertically not lying
flat on soil medium.
LOCAL HABITAT: Rainforest
DISTRIBUTION: From the Torres Strait
Islands to the Gladstone area.
GENERAL: The timber has a similar grain to
Silky Oak. The attractive foliage makes this
fast-growing species a worthy ornamental
for larger areas.
