Argyrodendron polyandrum Brown Tulip Oak S &A Pearson FAMILY: Sterculiaceae HABIT: A tall upright tree to 45m with greybrown longitudinally fissured or wrinkled trunk, buttressed at the base. LEAVES: Alternate, trifoliate, long stalked leaves are dark green above and bronze beneath. The elliptic leaflets, about 7-12cm long, have conspicuous lateral veins. FLOWER/FRUITS: Terminal clusters of small creamish, bell-shaped flowers are followed by bunches of dry brown, one seeded, long winged fruits during December and January. PROPAGATION: Remove ‘wings’ and sow seed within 7 days. The fruit is sown with the winged side standing vertically not lying flat on soil medium. LOCAL HABITAT: Rainforest DISTRIBUTION: From the Torres Strait Islands to the Gladstone area. GENERAL: The timber has a similar grain to Silky Oak.
