Tristaniopsis laurina syn. Tristania laurina
COMMON NAME; Water Gum
FAMILY; Myrtaceae
ORIGIN; Vic, Nsw, Qld
HEIGHT; 10-15mt
WIDTH; 6-8mt
HABIT; An upright tree with a solitary trunk, slender domed crown and dense canopy of foliage. Trunk bark
becomes attractively marked as older bark decorticates to expose young bark coloured red, pale-yellow or
grey.
FOLIAGE; Evergreen. Glossy green leaves above and paler beneath, 10-15cm long and 2-3cm wide.
FLOWERS; Small eucalypt like flowers, 1cm across, creamy to orange-yellow in colour, rich in nectar.
FLOWERING SEASON; November to January.
FRUIT; Woody globular capsule, 6-8mm across, green at first maturing to a mid-brown in autumn.
CULTURE & USE; Shade tree, roadsides, parks, gardens. Minimum natural rainfall 750mm.
PRUNING; Formative pruning when young to develop a strong central leader and bushy canopy may be
beneficial. Once the tree is established minimal pruning should be required apart from the control of the
occasional wayward branch which should be done in late winter.
COMMENTS; Tolerant of a wide range of soil types but prefers fertile loams or sandy soils with free
drainage and dependable water supply over summer. Does not like prolonged flooding. Frost tender when
young but should be safe to temps of -3*c when established.
