Name: Dobbhoff/Keofeed
Characteristics: Soft, plastic 6-8Fr., 76-109 cm, small
bore tube, distal end weighted with tungsten; water-soluble
lubricant on inner and outer surfaces.
Reason: Feeding
Nursing Information: Changed every 4 weeks; stylet for
insertion; need to keep stylet at bedside. Can be placed in
stomach or small intestine; takes 24 hours for passage into
intestines; passage into small intestine facilitated by client
lying on right side. Traditional methods for checking
placement often ineffective. X-ray should be done before
feeding to confirm placement; one placement method:
advance tube 25 cm, remove stylet, and put end of tube in
cup of water. If bubbles are seen withdraw; if no bubbles
advance tube another 30-40 cm into stomach.*
Nursing Interventions:
™ Promote client comfort
• Assure client can move freely without tension on tube.
• Do frequent nasal and oral care
™ Perform system checks
• Check placement of tube
• Check BS, Palpate abdomen
• Check Pressure settings
• Check Patency of suction and NGT
• Check drainage (amt, odor, color, consistency)
™ Monitor fluid/electrolyte balance
™ Document accurately
