Anemia is mostly caused due to iron deficiency,
which is associated with several functional
impairments. Anemia also predisposes pregnant
women to higher morbidity affecting their quality
of life and the birth weight of their newborns.
Overall, the pregnant women must have between
700 and 800 mg of extra iron, most of which is
needed during the last half of pregnancy when the
heaviest maternal and fetal demands occur. Iron
rich foods should be taken to prevent anemia and
to build up iron stores in the fetal body.
Here are some nutritional anemia – dietary
guidelines:





Take iron, folate and calcium supplements
regularly, after 14 – 16 weeks of pregnancy.
A well balanced diet plan with foods rich in iron,
good quality proteins, folic acid, Vitamin- ‘B12’
& C’ needs to be taken.
Its preferable to eat small meals at frequent
intervals to enhance absorption / digestion.
Include two servings of dark green and leafy
vegetables like amaranth, mint, parsley, onion
stalks etc. daily. Green leafy vegetables have to
be cooked well, mashed and can be given as
soup preferably.
Include adequate protein in the diet by
including milk, meat and poultry, paneer, curd,
cheese, soya granules.
Include an item from each of these food groups
every day :
 Cereals and millets: ragi malt, bajra, whole
wheat flour, puffed rice, rice flakes,
 Legumes: soy granules, cow pea (lobia), lentils,
moth beans, roasted Bengal gram, horse gram,
peas (dry)

Non vegetarian :mutton, egg, liver, oysters,
chicken, fish
 Nuts: almonds, pista, groundnuts, til, coconuts.
 Fruits: lime, sweet lime, amla, orange,
mango, water melon, seethaphal, raspberry,
pineapple
 Dry fruits: apricot, dates, black currants, raisins
To further enhance iron absorption from these
iron rich foods.
 Do not drink tea or coffee with your meals.
Take it an hour before or after the meal.
 Take a vitamin-C rich foods like citrus fruits,
tomatoes, limejuice, amla, cucumber etc.
along with your meals.
 Do not combine an iron-rich meal with too
many calcium rich foods like milk, cheese,
paneer etc.
 Too much fibre in the diet also affects the iron
absorption.
 Try to avoid refined and processed foods –
Limit intake of maida, pasta, noodles, polished
rice, ready-to-eat foods, etc.
 To avoid pickles.
