Section 4.5 ~ ASA and AAS
Topics in this lesson:
• AngleSideAngle (ASA)
• AngleAngleSide (AAS)
These are the final ways to prove that triangles are congruent. No... ASS and AAA are not ways to prove triangles congruent!
Vocabulary
included side the side connecting the vertices of two angles in a polygon
nonincluded sides
AngleSideAngle Congruence Postulate
If two angles and the included side of one triangle are congruent to two angles and the included side of a second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.
*Watch the placement of the side. That will be the only way to tell the difference between the two of these.
AngleAngleSide Congruence Theorem
If two angles and a nonincluded side of one triangle are congruent to two angles and the corresponding nonincluded side of a second triangle, then the two triangles are congruent.
Example 1
Can the triangles be proven congruent with the information given in the diagram? If so, state the postulate or theorem you would use.
Example 2
Can STW and VWT be proven congruent? If so, state the reason you would use.
