AREA EXAMINATION IN APPLIED OPTICS Coverage The exam will be based on the material covered in ME 587. This includes the following topics: Geometrical Optics, Matrix Methods, Aberrations Imaging Interference Coherence Diffraction Polarization Fresnel Equations, Thin Films Optical Properties of Materials Laser Beam Propagation Pedrotti, Pedrotti, and Pedrott, Introduction to Optics, 3rd Edition, Prentice-Hall, 2007. References: Hecht, Optics, 2nd through 4th Editions, Addison-Wesley, 1987-2000. Exam Philosophy The examination is intended to determine the student’s grasp of optical fundamentals and their application to specific problems. The ability to see what factors are important in a given problem and what solution approach to use will be emphasized. Exam Format 1. The exam is open book written exam. One of the reference books listed above can be used; however, any other materials such as supplementary notes, past homework, past exams, etc. are not allowed. 2. The exam will be two hours in length. It will consist of a number of problems to be worked. Rev. 08/2014
