Formation of a corrie/tarn
It is always useful to include annotated diagrams when asked to describe how a
feature is formed. Remember never write in bullet points as below
At the beginning of the ice age, snow builds up in north facing hollow, where less
sun.
In the cool climate where less snow is melted in summer than is deposited in
winter, the snow builds up, compacts and turns to frin.
Its weight causes it to move downhill under gravity.
At the back of the hollow freeze – thaw action loosens rocks, which become
frozen into the glacier, and plucked out as ice moves away This steepens the
back of the hollow.
The bottom of the hollow is deepened by abrasion as the rocks frozen into the
base of the ice are scraped across the ground.
After the ice age the corrie lip and terminal moraine can act as dam for melt
water left in the corrie lake or tarn.
