BR: What is humidity?
L93- Bell Ringers
R94: Air Density
• Density = amount of material in a given
volume of space
• For a solid, the density remains the same even
as the environment changes (a gold bar is the
same at sea level, under the ocean and on top
of a mountain)
• For gas, such as air, density can change
R94: Air Density
• Factors that affect air density:
– Pressure
– Temperature
– Humidity
R94: Air Density
Pressure:
– Weight of column of air
– Increase amount of weight = more crammed the
air molecules get
– Increase in pressure = more dense
R94: Air Density
Temperature:
• When you heat air, the molecules have more
energy and spread apart
• Warmer air = less dense
R94: Air Density
Humidity:
• The amount of water vapor in the air
• Increase in water vapor (means air has less mass) = less dense
L95: Severe Cyclonic Storms
Quick Write:
What is the difference between a hurricane,
typhoon and a cyclone?
L95: Severe Cyclonic Storms
Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same
weather phenomenon: BUT they have different
names depending on where they form in the world.
Needed for Cyclonic Storms to form:
• Warm tropical oceans
• Moisture
• Light Winds
L95: Severe Cyclonic Storms
Hurricane: Atlantic and Northeast Pacific
Typhoon: Northwest Pacific
Cyclones: South Pacific and Indian Ocean
Cyclonic Storm Assignment
Pick ONE cyclonic storm that has occurred
(hurricane, typhoon or cyclone) anywhere in the
world.
Create a flyer/poster (by hand) about that storm
and how to prepare or prevent them
Cyclonic Storm Assignment
Include:
Name of Storm
When and where it happened
What caused it? Triggered it?
What damages were done?
Death toll?
How can we prepare for these storms?
Can they be prevented? If so, how?
Pictures!
R95: Importance of Water Vapor
