Project Engineering and Commissioning
Check list – Freelance System
For more details about how to configure, how/where to check? Please refer getting started manual of
related Freelance version.
Check-List for System requirement
1. Check Operating system requirement for all component
Windows 7 professional/Enterprise Sp1 32/64 bit
OPC and Trend server can also be used with
(In case of integration with 800xA operation)
Windows 2008 Server R1 SP2 32 bit
Windows 2008 Server R2 SP1 64 bit
2. Check Security updates are up-to date
Can be found in the Solutions Bank TechInfo-Explorer under
Control Products and systems/Freelance/System/System
Versions-Freelance<Version number>/FIELD ALERT
3. Check Internet Explorer
With Windows 7 IE 9/10 supported
With Windows 2008 server IE 9 supported
4. Check Microsoft Office ( BDM and Reports requires excel)
Office 2010 SP1 32 bit
Office 2013 32 bit
5. Check windows user account configuration
Installing the Freelance software requires administrator
privilege
6. Check Recommended PC equipment
For Engineering station : hard disk 500MB for
installation/10GB for operation, CPU speed >=2GHz, 3 GB
RAM, 10/100Mbit Eth Card
For Operator Station : hard disk 500MB for installation/2GB
minimum for operation/>=80 GB for archiving (configuration
dependent), CPU speed >=3GHz, 3 GB RAM,
Graphic card for dual monitor – Matrox Millennium P690,
Multi-display fiber-optic remote graphics unit – Matrox
Extio2 2208, 10/100Mbit - Eth Card.
OPC/Trend Server : hard disk 500MB for installation/10GB
for operation, CPU speed >=2GHz, 3 GB RAM, 10/100Mbit
Eth Card.
7. Check Control Network
Recommended Freelance network and company network is
separate?
8. Check IP addresses and subnet mask

Recommended IP(IPv4) addresses besides the windows PCs
the process stations for time synchronization should be
configured to
IP address : 172.16.x.y, x=0…15, y=0…255
Subnet mask : 255.255.240.0
9. Network Configuration check
Check configured IP addresses are reachable
List the PC IP addresses down and run ping test
1,2,3……
Note : Incase ping is not working check firewall settings on
destination machine.
>Start > Control Panel > System and Security >
Administrative Tools > Windows Firewall with Advanced
Security > Enable the inbound firewall rules named Files and
Printer Sharing(Echo Request – ICMPv4-In) to allow ping
request
10. Check Third-party software
Adobe Acrobat – PDF reader software is available?
Antivirus Program – McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 patch1
for Windows 7 is tested. Check version?
Note: while installation disable antivirus program.
FTP Server – Incase file transfer is used setup FTP server
Java Installation – Incase controller web browser to be
displayed via emulator manager. Java 6 Update 20 or higher
is recommended
11. PC Setings
Check automatic windows updates must be disabled
Check user account control is disabled?
Check that firewall is configured to allow the Freelance
applications to communicate properly
Check power option is configured to High Performance?
Check Screen saver is disabled?
Check the active background programs are configured?
- Exclude ‘<Freelance_Installation_folder>\proj & Tempdirectory of the logged in user’ from background programs
access.
Check that windows disk defragmenter tool is deactivated?
Check Screen resolution for Freelance Operation(DigiVis) PC
- For new-design interface : select resolution 1280x1024
pixel(minimum vertical height should be 1024 pixels)
- For conventional-design interface : select resolution
1024x768 pixel(Vertical height should be less than 1024
pixels)
Check for digivis Windows 7 Basic theme is set
Check windows taskbar is disabled
Check in production mode windows key at the keyboard is
disabled via configure tool.

- Are all changed or modified parameters stored in the
project files?
- Are all function block parameters in the project files
documented?
- Have all project files been exported from the existing
version of control builder F version
Checklist after Installation of Freelance setup
1. Check Freelance installation via Freelance Check tool, goto
about menu and check installed item
2. Check windows firewall rules > under firewall advanced
settings > Inbound Rules > several entries start with
‘Freelance’
3. Enable antivirus and background tools if required
Configuring the software:
1. Check project elements such as Process station,
operator station, gateway station, OPC server are
configured
2. Check user-defined functions are organized under
USRTask
3. Check whether the USRTask cycletime, priority are
configured as per the requirement
4. Check required PL programs and SFC programs are
specified below each task
5. Check the necessary variables and tags are created with
correct data type
6. Field variables are mapped to HW IO channels
7. Global variables are enabled ‘Y’ in ‘X-Exported’ column
in variable list
8. All valid variables are allocated to resource and clear
unused/unallocated variables.
9. Ensure the function blocks parameters are configured
according to the requirement
10. Check the mandatory fields(red background in
parameter window) are correctly configured
11. check the project tree for plausibility (project -> Check
all) for errors

Configuring the hardware
1. Check the hardware configuration is done in CBF as per
the physical setup
2. Check the resource allocation is done correctly for each
resource
3. Check the IP address configuration of all resources as
per the network plan is configured in "Network
configuration"
4. Ensure unique resource ID is specified for each
resources in "Network configuration"
5. Validate the hardware configuration for plausibility
check
6. While inserting S800 remote I/O module via GSD
module position needs to be set manually according to
physical location, check module position is set in
module parameter > user tab ?
7. Controller boot parameters set accordingly

8. Incase of using device DTM and importing hw tree,
Check instantiated device DTM’s are installed on PC ?
9. Incase of Foundation fieldbus required capabilities files
are imported in libraries?

Check Digivis is installed on the system

For correct timestamp in trend, logs and report

synchronized
Configuring an time-synchronization
1. Check All PC’s and controllers are on 255.255.240.0
subnet. Check installation checklist
2. Time-synchronization is enabled via configure tool?
3. System time is set via CBF in commissioning mode?
4. Check CBF, DigiVis and controller shows same time?
5. Incase external time master – external time master is
configured under Gateway resource?
Commissioning Process station
1. Check project is free of any errors
2. On entering into commissioning mode, check process
station status is getting updated in Project tree
3. If "No operating system" is displayed check again for
the previous steps
4. If "Version error" is displayed, load the program and
check for any errors during download.
5. Check Load operation completed successfully by its
state("Running" will be displayed)
6. Also check in Project tree all project objects are
appearing green while "Running" state
7. Test the application for online values.
8. Simulate or use physical IOs to test functionality of
application.
9. Check Controller and communication modules are
loaded with correct firmware.

Commissioning the operator station
1. Check project is free of errors
2. Ensure Digivis application is started in the
corresponding operator station
3. On entering into commissioning mode, check operator
station is getting updated in Project tree
4. If "No connection" is displayed check the configuration
steps again for any errors
5. If "Version error" is displayed, load the program to the
operator station
6. Check for any errors during downloading and check if
'Running" state is displayed on successful loading
7. Test the functionality of Operator station as per your
configuration

1. Ensure OPC server is added under the Project tree
2. Check Name and Location is entered correctly, where
the OPC server is running

1. Ensure necessary hardware and cabling are done as per
the requirement (Refer M&I steps)
2. Check the modbus function blocks are configured
correctly in parameter window

Check-List for Mounting & Installation
1. Ensure Minimum spacing above and below AC 800F is
150 mm
2. Maximum temperature at the AC 800F bottom side (air
intake):60 °C
3. Ensure controller is provided with a functional
grounding
4. Is a buffer battery installed in the Ethernet module with
right polarity
5. Did you observe the max. number of nodes
(transmitters/receivers/repeaters)
6. Is the appropriate Profibus connector used
7. Is the appropriate Profibus cable used (characteristic
impedance, capacity)
8. Does the Profibus cable have the appropriate crosssectional area
9. Was the cable connected properly to the terminal
block? Was it tested?
10. Is the cable terminated properly at both cable ends?
11. Has the Profibus cable the appropriate length (max.
length observed?) related to the desired transmission
rate?
12. With redundancy, is the connection suitable for
Redundancy Link Module (RLM)
13. With RS232C, only: Is the max. cable length of 15 m
observed?
14. Is the appropriate cable used (with sufficient wire CSA,
shielded)?
15. Were all connector pins not assigned to RS232C left
free?
16. With redundancy, Is the connection between the
terminal blocks correct?
17. With RS485, only - Did you select either internal or
external termination?
18. With internal termination: Is the termination active, if
the module is located at the end of the bus?
19. With external termination:
a) Were both cable ends terminated properly?
b) Is the internal termination disabled?
c) Is a 1kΩ pull-up, 100Ω and 1kΩ pull-down resistance
circuitry used as the external termination?
d) Is an external 5-V power supply provided for external
termination?
e) Were all connector pins not assigned to RS485 left
free?

20. Is/are the IP address (es) set properly, depending on
the mode (standard case, special case or redundancy
case) as per the network plan?
Configuring the Boot Loader:
1. Were the internet addresses set properly (only
required in special case)?
2. Were the subnet addresses set properly?
3. Did you select the proper network type?
4. Do you know the IP address of the default router? Did
you set it correctly?
5. Did you set the reaction on operating system boot as
desired?
6. Did you select the extended selftest setting and the
waiting time for the configuration mode as required?
7. Did you <Save> the settings?
8. Did you set the time correctly?
