APPLICATIONS FOR POSITION OF HEAD CARPENTER
Rainbow Stage (1993) Inc. Is looking for a Theatrical Stage HEAD CARPENTER for its 2017 Theatre
Season at Kildonan Park. Only Members of IATSE or persons approved by IATSE Local 63 need
apply.
HEAD STAGE CARPENTER
Dates: May 29th to September 8th, 2017
Rainbow Stage is seeking a qualified person to become an integral part of the stage crew. The
successful candidate will directly report to the Production Manager and/or the Technical
Director. The successful candidate will also be directly responsible for the operation and
management of the stage in construction of the play’s scenery, the rigging of the scenery and the
management of the crew on the stage of the theatre and provide efficient and reliable
organizational skills to be able to achieve this requirement.
Responsibilities shall include but not be limited to:














Report directly to the Production Manager in matters of equipment, scheduling, staffing requirements and
show preparation.
Oversee and manage a house crew of six (6) technicians as well as any added crew required to set-up, run
and dismantle a production.
Attend all production meetings, staff meetings, on stage rehearsals and notes sessions as scheduled by
management.
Collaborate and consult with the Director, designers, Stage Manager and other Production Department
heads with regards to rehearsals and performances and to maintain the artistic integrity of the theatre’s
productions.
Maintain and repair all rigging hardware and soft goods associated with every production. Also to inspect,
maintain & improve, where necessary, all of the stage equipment and tools.
Co-ordinate and supervise the set-up and operation of all scenic elements and rigging for every production.
Prepare timesheets and payroll accounting for the stage crew for each week of the production and have
both completed by Sunday morning of every week during the operating season.
Co-operate and co-ordinate with the Master Carpenter and assistant scenery construction carpenters in
planning the installation of all scenic elements on the stage.
Provide a safe and clean working environment on stage, back stage and in storage areas for performers,
technicians and staff.
Direct and operate, with the running crew, the scenic movements and flying elements of the show.
Have knowledge of automation, pneumatics, pyrotechnics, scenic carpentry and special effects is an asset.
Adhere to theatre company’s policies and have knowledge of Union’s collective agreement and adhere to
those policies (once engaged as the Head Carpenter).
Report all accidents and incidents out of the norm to the Production Manager, especially when it involves
injury to anyone on the Employer’s premises or while working for the Employer.
Must adhere to and enforce all safety regulations as required by Manitoba Safety and Health for worksites
especially during the set-up and dismantling of shows. Ensure that all safety footwear must be worn at
these times. As well, a hard hat & high visibility vest must be worn when work is being done overhead.

Qualifications:











Must be a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) labour union.
Previous experience in stage carpentry is required and is an asset along with knowledge in theatrical stage
technology.
Must have an ability to work well in a team atmosphere and possess strong leadership skills.
Be comfortable with working in an open-air environment.
Possess a strong desire to hone and use existing skills with an ability to learn new ones.
A diploma or certificate of graduation from a recognized theatrical training institute; or equivalent work
experience.
Be highly resourceful and possess efficient problem solving and time management skills.
Demonstrate strong leadership, as well as writing, mathematical, analytical and communication skills.
Ability to read technical drawings from designers in all stagecraft disciplines.
Possess personal tools specific to stage technician requirements as the theatre may not have some of these
on hand.
Should have a working knowledge of MicroSoft Excel and MicroSoft Word.
