Tectonic Plate Movement
(Pg. 98-99)
• There are three ways scientists explain how
tectonic plates move:
1. Mantle Convection
2. Ridge Push
3. Slab Pull
Mantle Convection
• States that as the mantle heats up, the hotter
part rises and the cooler part sinks due to
convection
• As the mantle moves, it drags the tectonic
plates with it
• Criticism: Does not explain how it would
create huge amount of force needed to move
tectonic plates
Ridge Push
• New rock formed at the oceanic ridges rests on top of the old rock due to its
density
• The older rock slopes down and away from the mid ocean ridge
• As the new rock cools, it becomes more dense and responds to gravity
• This force pushes the old rock away from the mid ocean ridge
Slab Pull
• At subduction Zones more dense rock sinks (subducts) beneath less dense
plates
• As the plate sinks, it pulls the rest of the plate with it
• In general, sinking plates move faster than other plates leading scientists to
believe slab pull is the most important
