Leguminous plants, such as clover, are able to survive in soil in low
nitrate conditions. Explain why.
Use the information below to help you answer the question in your
book
Clover is a type of Legume. These are a group of plants that are
adapted to take in nitrogen from the air. Other plants are not able to
do this despite the high amount of nitrogen available in the air. They
are able to do this due to the symbiotic relationship they have with the
bacteria found on the root nodules. The ability to form this mutualism
reduces fertilizer costs for farmers and gardeners who grow legumes,
and allows legumes to be used in a crop rotation to replenish soil that
has been depleted of nitrogen. Legume seed and foliage have a
comparatively higher protein content than non-legume material,
probably due to the additional nitrogen that legumes receive through
nitrogen-fixation symbiosis. The high protein content makes them
desirable crops in agriculture.
