Biodiversity is the variety of life
Biodiversity includes all living things: insects, spiders, fungi, bacteria, mosses, plants,
vertebrates (birds, mammals, frogs, reptiles) and many other groups of organisms.
Species diversity is the number of species present in an area.
Introduced (exotic) species – have been brought to New Zealand by people
Native species – are the species found in New Zealand naturally (not introduced). We share
some native species with Australia (e.g. Harrier hawk)
Endemic species – are the native species found nowhere else in the world! They are unique
to New Zealand.
How many endemic species does New Zealand have?
Plants = 80% are endemic species
Insects = >90% are endemic
Birds = 25% are endemic species
Bats, frogs, reptiles = all New Zealand species are endemic
Great Britain has only 2 endemic species; 1 plant and 1 animal!
Scientists around the world have found many more species of insect (e.g.
butterflies) and fungi (e.g. mushrooms) than they have species of birds
or mammals. The size of the organisms in the picture represents the
number of species in that taxonomic group. The small bird shows how
few bird species there are compared to other groups of organisms, such
as insects or molluscs.
What will we find during BioBlitz?
Will we find the same pattern of species diversity?
Will we find more insects and fungi than bird species?
How many introduced species will we find?
How many native species will we find?
Come and join us!
