Review Guide for Test # 2 MAT182 Trigonometry
SYLLABUS APPROVED CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED ON THIS FIRST TEST. This test will be graded out of 99 points and is
worth 25% of your course grade!!!! I have indicated the point value for each question below.
In order to prepare for the review day YOU should read through the following information about each test question.
You should look back through your old homework problems and class notes that pertain to each question and show up
to class on the review day prepared to ask specific questions. I can re-explain any concept that you would like
clarification on or I can do any specific homework problem that you would like to see worked out. If you show up
unprepared to ask questions you will not get much benefit from the review day.
The test will have 9 questions (some with parts) and you will have from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. to take the test. All
tests must be turned in by 2:45 p.m. If you finish early, which some of you will, then just turn in your completed test
and you may leave.
Question 1: (5 points) Given the equation of a sine or cosine function in standard form find the Amplitude, Period and
Phase Shift. Similar to HW 2.1 # 11 or 12
Question 2: (5 points Given the equation of a sine or cosine function in standard form find the Amplitude, Period and
Phase Shift. Similar to HW 2.1 # 11 or 12
Question 3: (15 points) On this problem you will be given three graphs of trigonometric functions. It will be your job to
come up with the equation for the graph (5 points for each correct equation). You can practice using the HW 2.1
multiple choice problems #13 – 20 AND of course the website we worked on in class that gave us graphs to come up
with the equations for but you should probably also study the tangent graphs from HW 2.1 # 7 – 9 also.
Question 4: (10 points) Be able to simplify a trigonometric expression using the identities that you are supposed to
know. Similar to HW 2.2 # 4 - 8
Question 5: (10 points) Use the appropriate sum or difference identity to evaluate a trigonometric function at a nonstandard angle. Similar to HW 2.2 # 10 - 12
Question 6: (14 points) Find the exact value of sin 2
cos 2
tan 2
and the quadrant in which 2 lies
given certain information…similar to HW 2.3 # 1 – 3 . Note: 5 points for each of sin 2
each for tan 2
and
cos 2 and 2 points
and the quadrant in which 2 lies
Question 7: (10 points) A problem similar to HW 2.3 #7. Show all of your work just like I did in the homework on a
problem like this. Do NOT use the trigonometric function buttons on your calculator for this problem BUT you may use
the other keys on your calculator to help you with the arithmetic.
Question 8: (10 points) Be able to simplify a trigonometric expression using the identities that you are supposed to
know. Similar to HW 2.3 # 10, 11
Question 9: (10 points) Prove a trigonometric identity. See YOUR HW 2.4 # 1 – 14.
