Independence Day: September 2, 1945. Located in South East Asia. Landmass of 331,698 km2. Land borders with China, Laos and Cambodia. Approximately 91 million people (over 50% of population under 30 year old); Rural population around 67%. OVERVIEW ON VIETNAM The history of Vietnam had witnessed untold hardships and challenges in its struggles against foreign invasions for national defence and construction. The war resulted in very heavy consequences on Vietnam. Among the leading country group of production and export in rice (the third largest exporter), coffee, casewnut (the second largest exporter), pepper (the first largest exporter), rubber... OVERVIEW ON VIETNAM GDP growth rate for 2015: 6.68%; Inflation rate in 2015 reduced to only 0.63% Has diplomatic reations with 185 countries and trade relations with over 220 countries and teritories in the world. Is a active and responsible member of over 70 regional and international organizations such as ASEAN, APEC, WTO, UN... OVERVIEW ON VIETNAM Economic integration process: 1986: Started “Doi Moi” (renewal) process. 1995: Became ASEAN member; Normalized relations with the US. 1998: Became APEC member. 2007: Became WTO member. Jan. 4, 2016: member of TPP. VIETNAM-BRAZIL RELATIONSHIP Bilateral Cooperation: Exchanged many high – level visits: Delegations of the Party, State, the National Assembly, Ministries, Central Agencies, localities, mass organizations and businesses. Signed a number of cooperation agreements: + Agreement on political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries (10/1995); + Agreement on Cultural Cooperation; Agreement on cooperation between the two Chambers of Commerce (10/2003); + Agreement on Health Cooperation (5/2007); + Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the establishment of the Joint Commission; + Agreement on scientific and technological cooperation; MOU on sports cooperation; + MOU on cooperation between Agriculture and Development Bank of Vietnam and Brazilian Bank SA (7/2008); Rural +Agreement on Plan of Action on poverty reduction between the Ministry of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs of Viet Nam and Ministry of social Welfare and poverty Alleviation of Brazil (4/2012)… VIETNAM-BRAZIL RELATIONSHIP Bilateral Cooperation: Agreements/MOUs had completed negotiation (wait to sign) or has been negotiating: + Framework Agreement on Technical cooperation; + Education Cooperation Agreement; + MOU on Agricultural cooperation; + Framework Agreement on Defense cooperation; + Agreement on maritime transport; + MOU on Tourism… VIETNAM-BRAZIL RELATIONSHIP Multilateral Cooperation: Shared views on United Nations reform and other international issues. Brazil supported Viet Nam to become a full member of WTO, non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2008 -2009 term; Viet Nam supported Brazil to be on this position for the 2010 – 2011 term. The two countries also have a mutual support on participation of different mechanisms in the United Nations. Vietnam has affirmed its support for Brazil to become permanent member of the United Nations Security Council when it will be expanded. VIETNAM-BRAZIL RELATIONSHIP THE PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE DIPLOMACY: In June 2010, Viet Nam - Brazil Friendship and Cooperation Association was established. In April 2012, Brazil - Viet Nam Friendship Association was established. In Feb. 2014, Brazil - Viet Nam Friendship Association in Rio Grande do Sul State was established. VIETNAM-BRAZIL RELATIONSHIP TRADE RELATIONS: In 1989, when the two countries established diplomatic relations, the bilateral trade volume was only 16 million USD; in 2009, it reached 560 million USD, increasing by more than 35 times. In 2010, for the first time, the bilateral trade volume between Viet Nam and Brazil reached 1 billion USD; In 2013 it surpassed 2 billion USD (reaching 2.4 billion USD) and in 2014 reached 3.35 billion USD, increased to 3.91 billion USD in 2015. After 26 years, the bilateral trade volume between Viet Nam and Brazil has increased over 244 times (from 16 million USD to 3.91 billion USD). Brazil is now the largest trade partner of Vietnam in the Latin American region. The Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agricuture in South Brazil with Vetnam was inaugurated last week (April 24) in Curitiba. PROSPECTS Favourable conditions for doing business: Vietnam is a emerging country with fast economic development, stable political situation. Stable local currency, low inflation. Low labour costs. Favourable policies for foreign investment and doing business. Vietnam and Brazil are both large and potential markets (over 200 millions people in Brazil and obout 91 millions in Vietnam). Vietnam is a gateway to active and promising ASEAN Market with about 633 millions people with total GDP is 2.600 billion USD/year and Brazil is a gateway to MERCOSUR and Latin America. PROSPECTS Good relationship between Vietnam and Brazil. Fast development of trade relations but still far behind the real capacities of two countries. Vietnam is in big need of investment in industry, agriculture, transportation, airport, seaport, education, healthcare... Many kinds of Vietnamese products can be exported to Brazil: clothes, shoes, electronics, telefones, computers, seafood... Many kinds of Brazilian products can be exported to Vietnam: agricultural machineries, petroleum products, cotton, soybean, corn, fertilizer, leather, food for animal and many other agricultural products... CHALLENGES Far geographical distance between two countries. language barrier. Tariff barriers. Bureaucratic procedures. Brazil has not yet recognized Vietnam as full status of market economy. Has not yet signed the agreement in avoiding double taxation. Limitation of understanding each others between two countries´business sectors. THANK YOU!
