CLASS TITLE:
TECHNICAL SERVICES COORDINATOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Dean, Academic Information Services (AIS), plan, organize and
coordinate the installation, maintenance, and repair of networking, telecommunications,
(data/voice/video) network servers, desktop workstations and any other future communication
and data services for the District; negotiate and administer vendor contracts relating to
installation and maintenance of data, voice, and video transfer infrastructure, install and maintain
networking electronics, network operating systems, and network servers; coordinate
maintenance and replacement of personal workstations, provide supporting documentation and
training to users; and perform related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Coordinate and implement the activities and operations of computing, computer networks
(including local and wide area networks), network servers, network electronics, telephone
services, and voice and video networks to provide required services in accordance with
established District priorities.

Coordinate and implement the installation and operation of network operating systems,
server operating systems, and software applications running on district servers.
2.
Coordinate the design and redesign of network infrastructure for the district.
3.
Maintain a current knowledge of networking electronics, network server operating
systems, workstation operating systems, and standard software applications.
4.
Coordinate the maintenance of personal workstations and personal workstation software.
5.
Research, evaluate and recommend to supervisor technical strategic planning required
to keep data, voice, and video networks, servers, and workstation client software current.
6.
Help design and maintain user databases, backup procedures, disaster-recovery
procedures for network servers.
7.
Coordinate the installation, programming, troubleshooting, and repair of network
equipment; perform programming changes on network systems; maintain records of work
and documentation of configurations.
8.
Design and coordinate the monitoring of data, voice, and video services in order to
assure reliable operations within the time frames specified by the district.
9.
Coordinate and implement documentation systems for maintaining comprehensive
documentation of the inventory of all computing, networking, and telephone equipment,
software, commercial documentation, network structure, configurations of network
electronics, server software, and software applications running on district servers.
10.
Confer with other coordinators in AIS to assure reliable technical support for their areas.

11.
Confer with faculty and administration in determining requirements for data, voice, and
video support for instructional and administrative computing applications
12.
Participate and consult with the Strategic Planning for Information Technology
Committee regarding the selection, implementation and use of computing facilities.
13.
Recommend to the district ongoing plans for providing internal and external telephone
services.
14.
Responsible for all desktop workstation, network server, network repair, replacement and
maintenance budgets.
15.
Manage the telephone contract, switch, and telephone services.
16.
Contact vendors for purchase and installation of computer and telecommunications
equipment and services; manage the preventative and corrective maintenance of
computer, network, and telecommunication equipment and services.
17.
In consultation with supervisor, select, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate the
performance of assigned personnel; establish priorities and assign work.
18.
Provide work direction and approve work done by vendors on the District's data network,
telephone switch, telephone network, servers, workstations, and software running on any
of these devices.
19.
Select, install, configure, and operate network monitoring software.
20.
Operate a variety of computer equipment including personal computers, network servers,
printers, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, scanners, storage disk drives.
21.
Attend meetings and workshops presented by vendors of hardware and software
networking/telecommunications products.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
At least one network operating system.
Multiple computer operating systems.
Multiple software applications.
Basic electronics theory and practices.
Telephone services.
Telephone switch management.
Project management.
Data networking concepts, applications and installations.
Knowledge of theory and operation of LAN and WAN hardware and software.
Basic electrical wiring.
Networking hardware: routers, switches, hubs, transceivers, network interface cards, fire walls.
Tasks associated with network administration.
Oral and written communication skills.
Recordkeeping techniques.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Read technical drawing (schematics) and technical materials.
Perform skilled work in the installation and maintenance of equipment.
Troubleshoot networking equipment.
Troubleshoot network servers.
Troubleshoot networked software applications.

Maintain a materials budget and inventory.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
Lift and carry equipment and supplies for short distances.

Changing priorities while meeting established deadlines.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree plus three years of direct experience in
operation of multi-node/multi-site computer WAN, servers, microcomputers and peripherals.
Knowledge of one programming language required. Experience managing a voice network
including a digital telephone switch.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Provide work direction to Network Specialist, Client Support Specialist, AIS staff, student
workers and vendors as required.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Occasional to frequent lifting of heavy objects including but not limited to feed cable reels and
computing equipment may be required depending on projects needed.

Exposure to frequent noise from computer operations; subject to working outside in inclement
weather; subject to working around high voltage, attics, crawl spaces, cramped and awkwardly
configured workstations and in poorly-lighted areas.
