Course Philosophy: Applied Ethics
Philosophy: Philosophy 2003 introduces students to influential ethical theories from moral
philosophy and contemporary applications of those theories to issues that arise in professional
settings, such as health care or business.
Bottom Line: The emphasis in the course is professional ethical development. Students study
the ethical code for their intended profession, research an area of significant ethical discussion
and legal activity related to the professional code, interview a practitioner concerning his or her
experiences with ethical issues, and write a term paper combining all elements of earlier
research.
Instructor Objectives: The instructor’s teaching techniques should ensure students are able to:





Distinguish arguments from non-arguments
Identify common informal fallacies
Conduct online and library research as well as a personal interview.
Write papers and design a PowerPoint presentation to report on research.
Engage in graded role play exercises to demonstrate an understanding of the ethical
obligations of professionals working in their intended field.
Assignments: Instructors may make use of whatever assignments they deem necessary to
develop Critical Thinking and Communication Skills, or an awareness of Society and Self, such
as



Online or in class examinations over the basics of logic and argument, ethical theories
and related terms, and ethical guidelines for members of learned professions
Group exercises based on medical scenarios, films, web sites, or similar materials
Individual written projects involving library research and interviews with medical
practitioners.
Assessment & Final Exam: All instructors during the fall semesters are expected to participate
in the assessment of the course as directed by the lead instructor noted below.
