REVISION QUESTIONS
1.
a.Give TWO uses for each of the following devices in a personal computer
i.
hard disk drive
Back-up of data and programs
Store very large files which need to be transported from one computer to another.
ii.
CD ROM drive
Distribution of software
Distribution of music
b.
Give TWO ways small high capacity storage devices have influenced the
development of portable equipment that can be used for work and play
Small and high capacity storage devices are portable, easy to carry around AND can store
large files.
2.
Computers need memory and backing storage
a.Give ONE difference between main internal memory and backing storage
Backing storage is any storage which is not classed as ROM or RAM but main internal
memory is of them.
b.
Give ONE example of what would be stored in main internal memory
Data processed by the CPU
c. Give ONE example of what would e stored in backing storage
Software
3.
Data needs to be stored for future use. Here are a number of storage devices/media.
For each of these, explain a suitable use and explain clearly why the storage device/media is suited
to the application.
a.Memory card - digital camera, it is small, thin and removable
b.
CD ROM - distribution of software and music - once written, the data cannot be
erased, which is useful for backing up
c. Magnetic hard drive - operating systems - they have very high access speed, and very
high storage capacity
d.
Flash/pen drive - store photos, music and other data files - it offer large storage
capacities and they are small and portable
TEST YOURSELF
The following notes summarize this topic. The notes are incomplete because they have words missing.
Using the words in the list below, copy out and complete the sentences A to G, underlining the words
that you have inserted. Each word may be used more than once.

backups
A.
Backups are copies of data and program files kept for security reasons.
B.
Backing storage is used for the storage of programs and data that are not needed
immediately by the computer.
C.
Flash/pen drives are the most popular backing storage media because they are very small
and cheap compared to the alternatives.
D.
Currently they are also sued for storing backups of programs and data in case the
originals are damaged or destroyed.
E.
Hard drives consists of a series of disks with a magnetic coating and a series of read/write
heads which put the data onto or record it off each surface.
F.
Cartridges are usually use reels of magnetic tape in a hard plastic case
G.
Optical media include CD and DVD for storing data
