Purpose
This lesson explains how people become
U.S. citizens and how citizenship is
granted in the United States.

The qualifications for U.S. citizenship have changed
as this country has matured.

According to the fourteenth amendment, children
born in the United States, except those of foreign
automatically citizens
ambassadors, are __________________.

The conferring of citizenship by “jus sanguinis”
applies to all children born to United States citizens,
either male or female.

Citizens of other nations who seek citizenship in the
United States can do so through a process called
naturalization.

Prospective citizens must then renounce the citizenship
of their former country and swear an oath of allegiance
to the Constitution and to the laws of the United States.

Collective naturalization is a process whereby a group of
individuals may become United States citizens without
going through the normal process.
