COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course covers the applications of the Java language to education, electronic
commerce, scientific research, and distributed systems in general. Topics include:

Various aspects of programming using the Java Programming language

Software engineering practices including refactoring, patterns, and good design,

Architecture of the Web, including software and protocols for passing information in typical
Web applications using Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI);

Server-side programming using Servlets and JDBC.
The emphasis is on practical programming using these technologies.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
A student who has completed this course with a passing grade should be able to:






write software applications and applets in Java
develop applications using graphical user interfaces
interface with databases from the net
use graphics, and patterns
use good software engineering technique
write remote method invocations
COURSE POLICIES:
Attendance
For on-campus students, attendance is expected for each class meeting. Distance
students are required to participate in alternative Internet-based modes of instruction,
including reading the on-line lecture notes, asking questions of the instructors via e-
mail, and making regular use of the course Discussion Board to discuss the topics
posted by the instructor.
Make-Up Tests
All tests missed without prior permission of the instructor will be made up by
substitution of the final examination grade.
Incompletes
None will be given except for extenuating circumstances (your own). Incompletes
require a specific contract concerning completion
