control of all the important trade routes.
• Explored the Spice Islands
• Circumnavigated the world
• Magellan was able to find new sea routes to
trade spices

• First country to trade spices was Portugal
• All continents except Australia and Antarctica
participated in the spice trade
Pros/Cons of Spice Trade
• Pro: Spices were added to the food
• Con: Opium was introduced, creating a drug
problem for China
• Pro: Helped boost the economies of countries
involved
• Con: Helped start the slave trade
