Phar. Discussion week 13
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) stimulate certain serotonin receptors that can
cause a decrease in dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, which can have an effect on your
libido. She has been on an antidepressant SSRIs for 6 months and all SSRIs have been
documented as having sexual side effects. Depression itself can cause a low libido and is very
common in people with depression. Risk versus benefits will have to be weighed.
Not all antidepressants have sexual side effects. She needs to report her issues with her doctor
and they can discuss the various options. Stopping the medicine usually solves the sexual
problem but should only be under doctor’s supervision. Lowering the dose, switching to a nonSSRI drug are other options. Changing to Wellbutrin or adding it to an SSRI can help counteract
sexual side effects. Wellbutrin can actually increase one’s sex drive.
